Apple has revealed a new patent, a gaming controller that looks almost identical to a PlayStation DualShock controller. And if this patent becomes an actual controller, Apple could soon be tapping into the core gaming market.
The patent was originally filed for in March and the controller will be used with iPhones, iPads and the Apple TV. The Apple TV in itself could become a gaming console in the future, and with this new controller gamers might view it as a serious alternative to a PS3, Wii or Xbox 360 under their TV.
Although the image above shows the controller having a cable, the patent details a wireless connection using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). Many different gadgets already exist to turn your iPhone and iPad into classic games systems, with the iCade range being the most well-known. But a proper DualShock-style controller could turn the gaming market on its head. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would have to step up their game in order to make sure Apple doesn?t become a serious competitor in their own back yard, just like the Ouya console is threatening to do.
Of course, this patent may never become a reality and even if this controller did, it?s likely a few design changes would have to be made to make it look a lot less like a PlayStation peripheral.
It?s unlikely Apple will try to seriously compete with the core console games market, but I?m sure many Apple fans would jump at the chance to play games ?properly? on their TV rather than tapping a touchscreen and covering part of the action in the process.
