Tropical Storm Jose brushing past Bermuda
HAMILTON, Bermuda?? Tropical Storm Jose spun over the open Atlantic just to the west of Bermuda on Sunday, buffeting the wealthy British territory with gusty winds and intermittent showers.
The 10th named storm of the season was passing about 60 miles (95 kilometers) west of Bermuda, causing some storm surge and scattering debris on roads in western parts of the isolated island chain. There were no immediate reports of any serious damage or injuries.
"It's currently at the closest point of approach," meteorologist Ken Smith of the Bermuda Weather Service said early Sunday afternoon. "The tropical storm-force winds are limited to our western marine area, they aren't actually reaching the island."
Intermittent showers mixed with sunshine in Bermuda, which lies about 580 miles (933 kilometers) east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, already battered by Hurricane Irene. Many islanders headed to church in their Sunday best.
By Sunday afternoon, the nearest lightning activity was about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda, Smith said.
Jose, which formed early Sunday, could bring as much as 3 inches (8 centimeters) of rain to Bermuda, but projections currently show the center of the storm remaining offshore.
Jose was moving north at about 17 mph (28 kph), and had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph), said the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
U.S. meteorologist Jeff Masters, who writes a popular weather blog, said Tropical Storm Jose will not survive long due to strong upper-level wind shear from Irene, which was continuing its march up the East Coast on Sunday after weakening to a tropical storm from a once-powerful hurricane.
Smith said Jose was expected to weaken into a tropical depression on Monday and later dissipate.
Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Gert skirted past Bermuda, kicking up choppy seas along the island chain's coast but passing well east of the tiny British archipelago. It caused no serious damage.

Revolve your day around when your man will call ? If he calls in the middle of the movie while you?re at the theater, ?step out to take the call. you don?t want to miss him! And if you two are supposed to talk at a certain time and he?s not answering his phone, be sure to call and text at least thirty times or until he finally gets back to you. you have to talk!!! you have to make this work!
Lay awake wondering what he?s doing ? this is especially true if you?re on different time zones. If it?s midnight your time and 9?PM his, and you know he?s just now going out with his friends, you should probably lose sleep over it. How can you sleep when he?s out living a life that doesn?t include you?!
Cry. A lot ? Remind him how hard this is for you. Tell him that you?re not sure you can keep doing this but pressure him to reassure you that he can definitely do it. Be sure to say you can?t believe he chose _______ over you. Then stay at home and don?t go out because now you?re all splotchy.
Play 20 Questions every day ? where did he go last night? Who was he with? Who?s that? How old was she? How much did he drink? what did he wear? Did he see your text? Why didn?t he call? is he having doubts? What?s he doing today? Did he do his laundry finally? Did he book the ticket yet? Why is he being so quiet? is something wrong?
Break up with him ? Especially if you just need some reassurance that he loves you and is committed to this! Trying to sort things out and wind up a stronger couple after you get back together will be just as easy as if you actually lived in the same place. Hold it against him every day if he does the same thing to you, though.

WASHINGTON ? No matter how you slice it, religious freedom around the world is in trouble.
The Pew Research Center?s Forum on Religion Public Life released a study back in 2009 that found 70 percent of the world?s population lived in countries that had high levels of hostility or restrictions on religion. This month, Pew?s latest report, ?Rising Restrictions on Religion,? does not offer much comfort: Things are getting worse.
The new study looks at 2006-2009 and found religious restrictions and hostilities have increased in 23 of the world?s 198 countries. In 163 countries things stayed about the same and in 12 countries conditions actually improved.
Not so bad ? except those 23 countries where things got worse account for about one third of the world?s population ? more than 2.2 billion people.
?Obviously not all those people are suffering persecution or harassment for their faith,? said Brian J. Grim, a senior researcher and director of cross-national data at Pew and the primary researcher on this study. ?In fact, in some countries people may not notice the restrictions simply because they are not practicing a faith or they are part of the majority faith.?
Grim gave the example of Russia, where the Russian Orthodox Church is the majority faith and doesn?t feel any restrictions on religion. On the other hand, Pentecostal churches or Seventh-day Adventists may face restrictions constantly.
TWO APPROACHES
The Pew study takes two approaches to measuring religious freedom.
One approach is to look at ?Government Restrictions? on religious freedom. ?We look at the laws that protect the free practice of religion,? Grim said, ?but also if governments have policies that may, or may not be written into law, that might discriminate or target certain groups.? These are laws and polices that control proselytism, conversion and, in some cases, attempt to eradicate a religious group.
Egypt and France both saw rises in governmental restrictions during the study period. The countries with the worst restrictions were Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and China.
The other approach is to look at ?Social Hostilities? involving religion. This is the non-governmental actors and actions taken against religion. ?These are groups in society or even the neighbor next door who may mistreat or attack someone based on their religion,? Grim said. Social hostilities are measured by specific incidents of harassment, abuse, violence and even graffiti and hate speech. Also included are higher levels of attacks from mob violence, religion-related terrorism, war and so forth.

Having had several chances to use Google hangouts for gaming in the past while, I will give my conclusion: it kind of sucks.
There are several reasons for this sucking but first let?s look at what doesn?t suck: hanging out with new people and seeing them laugh and speak and participating in same is wonderful. I adore it. It?s good fun and should be done over and over again.
But gaming ? especially role-playing gaming ? requires reliable pacing and participation to keep the action forefront in everyone?s mind. Engaging each other in the fiction requires constant control of pace. And this is one place where the hangout kind of sucks.
First, the mediator has no effective control over activity. People come and go as they please, speak when they want, and there is no effective way to control all of this as, unexpectedly, most of the body language and related cues we use to do this fail to translate over the video and audio stream. With significant attention and preparation this could be managed by a motivated mediator.
Second, the technology is inconsistent, creating constant distraction. Some video feeds are great, some are awful, and some are absent. Awful video feeds are awful in different ways ? bad lighting, bad resolution, high latency, occasional drop-outs. All of these impact the pace of the game (especially drop outs) and make things less effective. Audio is even worse, in a way, since despite having video we are really there to talk and therefore (one hopes) to listen. So bad mics or mics that are not echo-correcting or mics that are awesome and picking up the dog, the neighbours, and the dishwasher, are all highly distracting.
It is the nature of this place that you cannot control the technology available to the attending parties. If you could, things might be much better ? you get great responsivity thanks to low latency, which makes mediation much easier. You get good visual input from everyone and you get reliable, comprehensible, audio with no feedback echo or shriek. You could finally ignore the technology and get on with the communication.
There?s no good solution for the dice yet. Every option is make-shift requiring window swapping, hidden information, or otherwise blocking the pace but forcing context switches. There really is no substitute for physical dice, on a table where they can be manipulated and seen by everyone at once. I hope we can get close, but so far the solutions are so distant (and of course highlighted by games that need all these axes of information, like Hollowpoint) that the pace of the game is crushed by the defect.
Finally, and this is more personal, I live with my wife. I love her dearly and I interact with her all the time. When there?s a game at our house, she doesn?t play but she does interact and she?s witty and nice and insightful and welcome. When I?m away gaming somewhere else I am, well, somewhere else and so she does not feel ignored even though she is not participating. But when I?m focused on communication for hours through this unstable and sometimes hard to understand medium, I am present with my wife and necessarily ignoring her. This sucks and is not acceptable.
So for now my preference for online gaming must remain text ? IRC or Google Docs ? and I think I will have to impose a minimum technology level on particpants. If we can?t all play at full speed, it?s really not worth playing to me. I?d rather just hang out with you and laugh and have a drink and introduce my girl and like that.

Protein linked to Parkinson's disease may regulate fat metabolism
ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2011) ? National Institutes of Health researchers have found that Parkin, an important protein linked with some cases of early-onset Parkinson's disease, regulates how cells in our bodies take up and process dietary fats.
Parkinson's disease is a complex, progressive, and currently incurable neurological disorder characterized by shaking, stiffness, slowed movement, and impaired balance. Parkinson's primarily affects people over 50, but in about 5 to10 percent of cases it occurs in people as young as their 20s. This form of the disease, which affects actor, author, and Parkinson's activist Michael J. Fox, is known as early-onset Parkinson's.
Parkin mutations are present in as many as 37 percent of early-onset Parkinson's cases. However, laboratory mice with defective Parkin do not display obvious signs of the disease.
This preliminary study, which appears online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation on Aug. 25, suggests defective Parkin may indirectly contribute to the development of some early-onset Parkinson's by changing the amount and types of fat in people's bodies.
"This discovery shows that the clues to understand Parkinson's disease may not necessarily be in the brain," said study leader Michael Sack, M.D., chief of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology in Cardiometabolic Syndromes at the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
The research team, composed of scientists from the NHLBI and the NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, observed that mice with defective Parkin did not gain weight in response to a high-fat laboratory diet, as regular mice typically do.
When the researchers examined several organs of the Parkin-defective mice, they noticed that the cells contained low levels of certain proteins that transport fat in the body. In contrast, normal mice that were fed the same high-fat diet had high levels of these fat-carrying proteins, as well as high levels of Parkin, suggesting that Parkin is involved in fat transportation.
The researchers saw a similar pattern when they analyzed blood cells from patients enrolled at the NIH Parkinson's Clinic. In lab tests, cells from people with Parkin mutations had less ability to absorb fat. These results provide evidence that the findings could be relevant in humans.
As to how fat may be important in Parkinson's, Dr. Sack notes that the brain cells destroyed during the course of the disease are found in a region called the substantia nigra, which controls movement, among other roles. "The neurons in this part of the brain are extremely active. Each one has over 300,000 connections and is continuously transmitting information," he said. "These neurons require good support in the form of their fat and cholesterol membrane. If the right types of fat aren't available, then cell integrity will be sub-par and they could be prone to damage."
Dr. Sack and his colleagues plan some early-stage clinical studies on the connection between fat metabolism and Parkinson's. They will continue working with the NIH Parkinson's Clinic and encourage patients to participate in the research as it moves forward.
