Preserving a historical home creates character in the community and allows the buildings to stand as reminders of how the town came to be today, Mr. Whitfield said.
Neither could pass up the chance to restore the Denne house that stands on a three-acre property at 415 Davis Dr.
?This house has been a mystery for 20 years,? Mr. Whitfield said, adding the iconic mansion is one of very few left, but it hasn?t been maintained and the couple wanted to bring it back to its former glory.
The house was built in 1904 by John Ough, a local builder who also constructed the red brick hotel at the corner of Main Street and Davis, along with the cupola of the Queensville School. Today it is commonly known as the Denne house as it stayed in the family for four generations, beginning with Charles Denne.
He was born in Thornhill, but came to Newmarket with his father and brothers in the 1850s to work in his father?s butcher and milling business. In 1878, he went into business for himself with a store east of Main Street that later included a meat-packing house that employed 12 men and processed 4,000 hogs a year. He was the founder of the Denne Pickle Factory on Davis and chairperson of the Newmarket Cemetery Board.
He married Josephine Forsyth, daughter of the owners and operators of the King George Hotel. Their only child, Rene, an accomplished porcelain painter and wood carver, moved into the newly built house when she was 19 and remained for the rest of her life.
Through the generations, the house was occupied by Denne, Forsyth and Bosworth children.
Mr. Whitfield admits he was pleasantly surprised to find the interior quite well kept as he was deceived by the peeling and run-down exterior.
The couple brought in specialists to rewire and bring the historic home up to building code without tearing apart the original plaster. Every surface, floor to ceiling, has been redone or restored as close to the original finish as possible to preserve the history of the home.
?It was filled to the brim with antiques, but most of those went with the family,? he said. ?But there are impressive elements, such as the two gargoyles on the downstairs fireplace, that give an impression of the time period.?
The Whitfields want the building to remain public due to its historic significance and are working with the town to address accessibility and parking issues before asking for an amendment to change the zoning from residential to commercial.
However, the Whitfields do not have any plans to give up ownership of the property. They want to find a business that will work well in the historic building and plan to hold a public open house in the near future to allow residents to explore the previously private residence.
Next on the to-do list is to restore the white house that sits to the west of the Denne home.
