Beer's bitter compounds could help brew new medicines

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Researchers employing a century-old observational technique have determined the precise configuration of humulones, substances derived from hops that give beer its distinctive flavor.

That might not sound like a big deal to the average brewmaster, but the findings overturn results reported in scientific literature in the last 40 years and could lead to new pharmaceuticals to treat diabetes, some types of cancer and other maladies.

"Now that we have the right results, what happens to the bitter hops in the beer-brewing process makes a lot more sense," said Werner Kaminsky, a University of Washington research associate professor of chemistry.

Kaminsky is the lead author of a paper describing the findings, published this month in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

There is documentation that beer and its bittering acids, in moderation, have beneficial effects on diabetes, some forms of cancer, inflammation and perhaps even weight loss.

Kaminsky used a process called X-ray crystallography to figure out the exact structure of those acids, humulone molecules and some of their derivatives, produced from hops in the brewing process. That structure is important to researchers looking for ways to incorporate those substances, and their health effects, into new pharmaceuticals.

Humulone molecules are rearranged during the brewing process to contain a ring with five carbon atoms instead of six. At the end of the process two side groups are formed that can be configured in four different ways ? both groups can be above the ring or below, or they can be on opposite sides.

Which of the forms the molecule takes determines its "handedness," Kaminsky said, and that is important for understanding how a particular humulone will react with another substance. If they are paired correctly, they will fit together like a nut and bolt.

If paired incorrectly, they might not fit together at all or it could be like placing a right hand into a left-handed glove. That could produce disastrous results in pharmaceuticals.

Kaminsky cited thalidomide, which has a number of safe uses but was famously used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women in the late 1950s and early 1960s before it was discovered to cause birth defects. Molecule "handedness" in one form of the drug was responsible for the birth defects, while the orientation of molecules in another form did not appear to have the negative effects.

To determine the configuration of humulones formed in the brewing process, coauthors Jan Urban, Clinton Dahlberg and Brian Carroll of KinDex Therapeutics, a Seattle pharmaceutical firm that funded the research, recovered acids from the brewing process and purified them.

They converted the humulones to salt crystals and sent them to Kaminsky, who used X-ray crystallography ? a technique developed in the early 20th century ? to determine the exact configuration of the molecules.

"Now that we know which hand belongs to which molecule, we can determine which molecule goes to which bitterness taste in beer," Kaminsky said.

The authors point out that while "excessive beer consumption cannot be recommended to propagate good health, isolated humulones and their derivatives can be prescribed with documented health benefits."

Some of the compounds have been shown to affect specific illnesses, Kaminsky said, while some with a slight difference in the arrangement of carbon atoms have been ineffective.

The new research sets the stage for finding which of those humulones might be useful in new compounds to be used as medical treatments.

Roche Turkey Selects Vidyo to Significantly Reduce Travel, Costs ...

HACKENSACK, NJ, January 30, 2013 ?? Vidyo,?Inc., the first company to deliver personal telepresence, today announced that its award-winning video communications and collaboration solution was chosen by Roche Turkey, a subsidiary of the multinational healthcare company Roche Group.? Vidyo?s solution was selected over a variety of other platforms, and was chosen primarily because it delivers superior quality video over standard IP networks, including the Internet, 4G and LTE and delivers seamless connectivity between room systems, desktops, laptops and mobile devices.

Prior to using Vidyo, Roche Turkey district managers had to routinely travel to headquarters in Istanbul.? ?Our employees often had to fly in the day before a meeting or stay overnight because of changeable flight schedules,? said Yavuz Sanes, IT Site Head Turkey, Roche Turkey. ?Travel is not only tiring and stressful, but costly in terms of time and money. Our managers are greatly enthusiastic over Vidyo?s many different benefits.? They have commented many times about how easy and efficient meetings have become through the use of Vidyo.?

To find the best video communications solution, Roche contracted Vitel, a highly regarded Systems Integrator in Turkey.? ?Vitel provided essential assistance during all phases of the project, from vendor selection to implementation,? said Sanes.

Throughout the entire Roche organization, and especially at Roche Turkey, innovation and sustainability are key goals.? In September, 2012, Roche was recognized the most sustainable healthcare company in the world, topping the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), for the fourth year in a row. The DJSI World and DJSI Europe Indexes track the performance of the leading sustainability companies based on environmental, social and economic performance.? ?Vidyo was a natural choice for Roche,? said Sanes. ?The Vidyo platform is perfectly in line with the high value our organization places on environmental issues, because of Vidyo?s unique ability to enable our employees to meet and conduct business from wherever they are, whenever they want, without the negative environmental impact of travel.?

The fact that Vidyo allows Roche Turkey employees to access telepresence-quality video communications over an iPad using VidyoMobile?, has been one of the most noteworthy benefits to the company. In August of 2011, Roche distributed iPads to its field force of 200 people and since that time, they have needed only one single device for all of their communications needs.? They are able to connect to conferences from wherever they are ? over the Internet, 4G and even 3G, when corporate networks are not available. ?According to Roche Turkey?s calculations, in 2011, seven hundred employees participated in 216 video conferences eliminating the need for 447,000 kilometers of flight travel and 31,000 kilometers of road travel. ?Roche Turkey also asserts that by switching to Vidyo, transportation related risks for employees were reduced.

?Vidyo has again demonstrated the ease and value of its telepresence-quality video communications platform, delivering significant benefits,? said Eric LeGuiniec, VP and General Manager EMEA at Vidyo. ??Roche Turkey is now able to conduct its business more effectively and increase the productivity of their employees by using Vidyo as the solution facilitates high-quality, natural visual communication on whatever device is convenient to Roche employees, regardless of location.?

The Vidyo Difference
The Vidyo communication and collaboration platform is software-based, highly flexible and can be easily customized for individual enterprise and vertical market video conferencing needs. FAO urges cash-strapped governments to keep up guard against bird flu

ROME (Reuters) - Governments must not allow financial constraints caused by the current global economic crisis to stop them keeping their guard up against avian flu, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said on Tuesday.

The agency, one of three international bodies that lead the global response to bird flu, warned of a repeat of the 2006 outbreaks, when the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus killed 79 people around the world and sparked fears of a pandemic.

Investment was vital to prevent a repeat of such a crisis, the FAO said.

"I am worried because in the current climate governments are unable to keep up their guard," FAO Chief Veterinary Officer Juan Lubroth said in a statement. "I see inaction in the face of very real threats to the health of animals and people."

Scientists fear avian flu, which is carried by water fowl and poultry and can be transmitted between birds, and from birds to people, could cause a catastrophe if it mutates to be able to spread between humans.

The virus has infected more than 600 people since it was first detected in Hong Kong in 1997 and is usually fatal. Bird deaths from the disease or culling cost economies $20 billion between 2003 and 2011, FAO said.

The UN agency, whose task is to coordinate the global response to outbreaks of avian flu in animals, said that while progress had been made in fighting the virus, outbreaks continue to occur in Asia and the Middle East.

The FAO also warned against a growing threat from Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a highly contagious disease that can decimate flocks of sheep and goats, which is expanding in sub-Saharan Africa.

A vaccine against the disease is available but tight finances, a lack of political will and poor planning mean PPR continues to spread, the agency warned.

BlackBerry Z10 review

DNP Z10 review

One cannot overstate the importance of this phone. This, the BlackBerry Z10, is the device upon which the fate of BlackBerry (formerly Research in Motion) hangs. That's not to say that the company will disappear if the Z10 -- and the BlackBerry 10 OS that it contains -- is not a mass-market success. But if this phone does not do its job of extending the reach of the 'Berry OS beyond those die-hard loyalists who have clung on to their Bolds and Torches and Storms, it's safe to say that BlackBerry is in for some very hard times.

The company hasn't exactly bet the proverbial farm on this BB10 release, but with massive financial losses tempered only by job cuts, plus an absolutely tectonic shift among the executive leadership and corporate culture architected by CEO and President Thorsten Heins, the phrase "make or break" feels pretty apt. So, then, is this the phone that's good enough to woo buyers away from the Galaxy S III or the iPhone 5 or any of the other delicious devices on the other platforms? The short answer is that no, as of now it isn't quite -- but of course it's a lot more complicated than that. Join us as we explore.

Want to hop the pond? Europe ?still reasonably priced?

6 hrs.

There's?good?news?for?budget-conscious?travelers?who?want?to?hop?the?pond?to?Europe:?Two new rankings show?many?top?destinations?are?downright?affordable.

"Most?of?Europe?is?still?reasonably?priced?for?Americans,"?with?costs?in?many?cities?similar?to?those?in?North?America,?said?Roger?Wade,?who?researched?and?compiled?two?recently?released?lists?that?rate?47?major?European?cities?based?on?affordability.

Bucharest (Romania), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Krakow (Poland)?are the cheapest major tourist cities on the?European Backpacker Index?for 2013, while Zurich (Switzerland), Oslo (Norway)?and Venice (Italy)?ranked as the most expensive.?

Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest (Hungary) are?the?most?affordable?destinations?on?the?Europe 3-Star Traveler Index for 2013, and Zurich, Paris and Venice are costliest.

?In places like Krakow, Budapest, and Prague, it's still very easy to get a meal for $5 and a beer for under $2 -- in very pleasant surroundings,? said Wade, founder of Price of Travel, a website that?helps?travelers compare expenses in major?cities around the world.

Europe's cheapest cities cost about a quarter as much as its most expensive,?the indices show.?

The Daily Backpacker Index daily rate for Bucharest is currently $23.38 a day; for Zurich, it?s $119.78 a day.

Sofia is the least expensive city on the 3-Star Traveler Index, due to well-located and well-reviewed hotels that can frequently be found for about $40 per night. A similar 3-star hotel room in Zurich starts at around $155 per night in shoulder season, Wade said.?Prices crept up very little overall for food, attractions and transportation, he?added.?

Rates?for?hostels?and?hotels?in?some?European?cities?have?been?declining,?data?show.

Hostels have come down in Bucharest, Krakow, Zagreb (Croatia), Barcelona (Spain) and even Rome, Wade said. ?It seems like more new hostels continue to open up (often converted from under-performing hotels), and hostel customers tend to be more price sensitive so the expensive places just don't fill up.?

Deals for 3-star hotels are good in St. Petersburg (Russia), Athens (Greece), Berlin and Barcelona, he said. ?The most dramatic difference by far is Moscow, which is?15th cheapest for backpackers, but 34th for 3-star hotels. The city has some good and cheap hostels, and things like public transportation and food are quite cheap if you follow the locals," Wade said. "But international-standard hotels in Moscow are notoriously expensive so it's in a whole different price category for those seeking comfort and English-language menus.??

The Backpacker Index is based on the price of a hostel bed (one night in a good location with good reviews), two public transportation rides, three budget meals, one cultural attraction and three inexpensive beers (or wine) for each day in each city.??

The 3-Star Index uses a centrally located and well-rated 3-star hotel room, taxi rides and a higher allowance for food prices.

These types of resources "appeal because they intrigue us and speak to the armchair traveler in us all, said?Jonathon Day, an assistant professor at Purdue University?s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

But they also are practical for planning, to help people organize and sort through an overwhelming amount of information.

It is ?really hard to compare prices of complex things like a visit to a city,? Day said. And by offering new options beyond the iconic locations, which are often expensive, it encourages experimentation. ?Lists like these place destinations that aren't 'top of mind' in front of potential travelers,? he said. ?This is good news for destinations competing for attention ... and ultimately visitors.?

The dollar is at a 13-month low?versus the euro, said Neil S. Martin, editor of the Trans-Atlantic newsletter, which reports twice a month on the U.S. market for travel to Europe. ?But that doesn't seem to dissuade very many Americans? from traveling to Europe. U.S. visits to Europe were up 3.9 percent to 11.2 million last year,? ?according to the Commerce Department --?probably the best year since 2007, he said.

European countries going through tough economic?times?--?Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland?--?are all very pro-tourist and welcoming, he said. The best deals are likely in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, "where local currencies have probably dropped versus the dollar."?

But saving money may not be the only benefit of budget travel. ?Rick Steves is famous for saying that the more money you spend, the larger the barrier you create between you and the local people, and I totally agree with that,? said Wade. ?If you have lunch in a cafe on the main town square you'll probably be surrounded by business travelers and other tourists, but if you walk a few blocks in any direction you can probably find the same meal (or better) for half the price and you might be the only foreigner in the place.??

Apple Has Been Granted A Trademark For Its ... - Business Insider

Apple has been granted a trademark by the U.S. government for the design and layout of its retail stores, according to a filing at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The company had applied for the trademark back in 2010 but it was rejected twice before finally being approved now,?according to ifoAppleStore.

The trademark covers the glass storefront, furniture arrangement, shelving, the Genius Bar and more.

In fact, it's quite detailed.

Here's the mark description from the USPTO:

The mark consists of the design and layout of a retail store.

The store features a clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled facade consisting of large, rectangular horizontal panels over the top of the glass front, and two narrower panels stacked on either side of the storefront.

Within the store, rectangular recessed lighting units traverse the length of the store's ceiling.

There are cantilevered shelves below recessed display spaces along the side walls, and rectangular tables arranged in a line in the middle of the store parallel to the walls and extending from the storefront to the back of the store.

There is multi-tiered shelving along the side walls, and a oblong table with stools located at the back of the store, set below video screens flush mounted on the back wall.

The walls, floors, lighting, and other fixtures appear in dotted lines and are not claimed as individual features of the mark; however, the placement of the various items are considered to be part of the overall mark.

You can check out the filing here at the USPTO's website.?

Kemba Walker & Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Selected To Play In The 2013 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge During NBA All-Star Weekend In Houston

?

January 30, 2013 ? The NBA today announced that Charlotte Bobcats guard Kemba Walker and forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist have been selected to play in the 2013 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, February 15, during NBA All-Star Weekend in Houston.

?We are very excited that both Kemba and Michael were selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge this year,? said Bobcats President of Basketball Operations Rod Higgins. ?It speaks volumes that two of our last three first-round draft selections have been recognized as elite players from their class for their on-court performance.?

Walker, who is averaging 17.9 points, 5.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 35.0 minutes this season, is ranked among the league leaders in five statistical categories including steals (6th), steals per turnover (T-17th), assists (T-18th), scoring (19th) and minutes played (36th). His current streak of 15 consecutive games is the longest double-figure scoring streak of his career and longest by a Bobcats player since 2011.

He is joined by fellow second-year players Kenneth Faried (Denver), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland), Brandon Knight (Detroit), Kawhi Leonard (San Antonio), Chandler Parsons (Houston), Klay Thompson (Golden State), Tristan Thompson (Cleveland) and Nikola Vucevic (Orlando).

Kidd-Gilchrist, who is averaging 9.9 points and 6.0 rebounds in 26.7 minutes this season, is one of only nine rookies to have started at least 25 games this season. He is ranked in the Top 10 among all NBA Rookies in blocks (4th), rebounding (T-4th), steals (T-9th), assists (T-8th) and minutes played (8th). On Nov. 10 against Dallas and Dec. 19 against Phoenix, he posted 25 points and 12 rebounds, joining Miami?s LeBron James as the only two players in NBA history to tally at least 25 points and 12 rebounds in a game twice before their 20th birthday. He was also selected by the NBA as the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for November.

Joining Kidd-Gilchrist among the rookie selections are his college teammate Anthony Davis (New Orleans), Harrison Barnes (Golden State), Bradley Beal (Washington), Andre Drummond (Detroit), Damian Lillard (Portland), Alexey Shved (Minnesota), Dion Waiters and Tyler Zeller (Cleveland).

The BBVA Rising Stars Challenge -- televised live nationally on TNT at 9 p.m. ET and broadcast live on ESPN Radio, with live audio also available on NBA.com in multiple languages -- features two teams each consisting of nine rookies and sophomores mixed together, drafted from a pool selected by the NBA?s assistant coaches.

This marks the second straight year rookies and sophomores will be mixed together on teams. The BBVA Rising Stars Challenge Draft is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 7, televised exclusively on TNT at 7 p.m. ET. TNT analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O?Neal will again serve as the general managers of TEAM CHUCK and TEAM SHAQ.

The last time the Bobcats were represented in the Rising Stars Challenge by both a rookie and sophomore player in the same game was during the 2006-07 season when Raymond Felton and Adam Morrison were selected.

US stocks mixed after uneven economic signals

U.S. stocks meandered between small gains and losses Monday, cooling off after a rally that had pushed the Standard & Poor's 500 index above 1,500 for the first time since December 2007. Encouraging news about manufacturing provided an early boost, but stocks fell later after a report on the pace of home sales fell short of expectations.

The government said before trading began that orders for long-lasting goods rose in December by 4.6 percent, helped by a 10 percent gain in orders for new aircraft. The report was a sign of strength for the manufacturing sector, a crucial driver of economic growth.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar said separately that its fourth-quarter net income exceeded analysts' expectations, after adjusting for the cost of a soured deal to buy a Chinese maker of roofing supports for mines. Caterpillar said it took a big charge in the quarter because the Chinese company had misrepresented its finances.

Caterpillar Inc. said it expects growth in China to improve without regaining the levels seen in 2010 or 2011. The stock was the biggest gainer in the Dow Jones industrial average, rising $2.11, or 2.2 percent, to $97.69 as of noon Eastern time.

A half-hour after trading began, the National Association of Realtors said that its index of pending home sales fell in December, suggesting that sales of previously occupied homes may slow in the coming months. The report, which was weaker than many economists had expected, helped push stocks lower for much of the morning. By midday, they were roughly flat.

The Dow rose 70 points to 13,895. The S&P 500 fell a fraction to 1,502. The Nasdaq composite index rose 11 to 3,161.

Economic data may have less impact on the indexes because traders have become harder to impress as the data have strengthened in recent weeks, said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist with PNC Asset Management Group.

"Before, even if you came in just at expectations, that was like a victory," he said. Because of the market's recent upturn, he said, "you get less of a pop for just making the numbers."

Among companies in the S&P 500 that reported earnings Monday, Biogen Idec Inc. said its fourth-quarter net income slipped nearly 3 percent because of a tax charge and higher expenses. Still, the biotech drug maker was one of the top gainers in the S&P 500, rising $5.33, or 3.7 percent, to $151.53.

Roper Industries Inc., which makes medical and industrial equipment, said its fourth-quarter net income rose 18 percent. But the company issued mixed guidance for the current quarter and full year 2013. It rose 42 cents to $119.25.

Several big tech companies are set to report after the market closes, among them web portal Yahoo Inc., hard disk maker Seagate Technology PLC and cloud computing provider VMWare Inc.

Strong corporate earnings helped push the S&P 500 through the 1,500 milestone Friday after several calm, relatively news-free weeks. In addition to companies' performance, traders have been encouraged by signals that housing market is improving steadily and hiring is picking up, albeit slowly.

There will plenty of fresh data to drive trading this week, including retail sales, economic growth and the government's report on hiring and employment in January, which is due out Friday. More than one-fifth of the companies in the S&P 500 will report fourth-quarter earnings this week.

Stone said stocks are trading sideways in part because many investors are awaiting economic reports later this week, especially the employment report. There is agreement among economists and analysts that the economy slowed in the fourth quarter, he said, and this week's numbers will help answer the question of "how slow, and how much did it impact employment."

The yield in the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.99 percent from 1.95 percent late Friday, reflecting lower demand for ultra-safe investments. After Monday's factory orders report, the yield rose briefly above 2 percent for the first time since April. A bond's yield rises as demand for it decreases.

Egypt's leader declares emergency after clashes

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi declared a month-long state of emergency in three cities along the Suez Canal where dozens of people have been killed over the past four days in protests his allies say are designed to overthrow him.

Seven people were shot dead and hundreds were injured in Port Said on Sunday during the funerals of 33 people killed there when locals angered by a court decision went on the rampage as anti-government protests spread around the country.

A total of 49 people have been killed since Thursday and Mursi's opponents, who accuse his Islamist Muslim Brotherhood of betraying the revolution that ousted long-time ruler Hosni Mubarak, have called for more demonstrations on Monday.

"Down, down Mursi, down down the regime that killed and tortured us!" people in Port Said chanted as the coffins of those killed on Saturday were carried through the streets.

Mursi, who was elected in June, is trying to fix a beleaguered economy and cool tempers before a parliamentary poll in the next few months which is supposed to cement Egypt's transition to democracy. Repeated eruptions of violence have weighed heavily on the Egyptian pound.

In a televised address, he said a nightly curfew would be introduced in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, starting Monday.

Several hundred people protested in Ismailia, Suez and Port Said after the announcement, in which Mursi also called for a dialogue with top politicians. Activists in the three cities vowed to defy the curfew in protest at the decision.

"The protection of the nation is the responsibility of everyone. We will confront any threat to its security with force and firmness within the remit of the law," he said, offering condolences to families of the victims.

In Cairo the newly appointed Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim was ejected from the funeral of one of the police officers who died during Saturday's clashes in Port Said, according to witnesses and police sources.

A police officer at the funeral said many of his colleagues blame the interior minister for the deaths of at least two policemen during Saturday's clashes as he did not allow the police there to carry weapons and were only given teargas bombs.

SECURITY MEASURES

The violence has exposed a deep rift in the nation. Liberals and other opponents accuse Mursi of failing to deliver on economic promises and say he has not lived up to pledges to represent all Egyptians. His backers say the opposition is seeking to topple Egypt's first freely elected leader.

Distancing itself from the latest flare-ups, the opposition National Salvation Front said Mursi should have acted far sooner to impose extra security measures that would end the violence.

"Of course we feel the president is missing the real problem on the ground which is his own polices," spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters. "His call to implement emergency law was an expected move given what is going on, namely thuggery and criminal actions."

The Front, formed late last year when Mursi provoked protests and violence by expanding his powers and driving through an Islamist-tinged constitution, has threatened to boycott the parliamentary poll and call for more protests if its demands are not met, including for an early presidential vote.

State television said seven people died from gunshot wounds in Port Said on Sunday. Port Said's head of hospitals, Abdel Rahman Farag, told Reuters more than 400 people had suffered from teargas inhalation, while 38 were wounded by gunshots.

Gunshots had killed many of the 33 who died on Saturday when residents rioted after a court sentenced 21 people, mostly from the Mediterranean port, to death for their role in deadly soccer violence at a stadium there last year.

A military source said many people in Port Said, which lies next to the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula, possess guns because they do not trust the authorities to protect them. However it was not clear who was behind the deaths and injuries.

In Cairo, police fired teargas at dozens at protesters throwing stones and petrol bombs in a fourth day of clashes over what demonstrators there and in other cities say is a power grab by Islamists two years after Mubarak was overthrown.

In Ismailia city, which lies on the Suez Canal between the cities of Suez and Port Said, police also fired teargas at protesters attacking a police station with petrol bombs and stones, according to witnesses and a security source there.

"KNEE-JERK REACTION"

Most of the deaths since Thursday were in Port Said and Suez, both cities where the army has now been deployed.

Heba Morayef of Human Rights Watch in Cairo said a state of emergency reintroduced laws that gave police sweeping powers of arrest "purely because (people) look suspicious".

"It is a classic knee-jerk reaction to think the emergency law will help bring security," she said. "It gives so much discretion to the Ministry of Interior that it ends up causing more abuse which in turn causes more anger."

The opposition Popular Current and other groups have called for more protests on Monday to mark what was one of the bloodiest days of the 2011 uprising.

Anti-Mursi protesters who have been camped out in Tahrir Square for weeks also demonstrated against Mursi's move to impose a state of emergency, reviving memories of Mubarak's era when emergency codes were in place for three decades and used to crush dissent and detain people without charge.

Protesters say Mursi has betrayed the revolution's aims.

"None of the revolution's goals have been realized," said Mohamed Sami, a protester in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and toppled Mubarak 18 days later.

"Prices are going up. The blood of Egyptians is being spilt in the streets because of neglect and corruption and because the Muslim Brotherhood is ruling Egypt for their own interests."

Clashes also erupted in other streets near the square. The U.S. and British embassies, both close to Tahrir, said they were closed for public business on Sunday, normally a working day.

The army, Egypt's interim ruler until Mursi's election, was sent back onto the streets to restore order in Port Said and Suez, which both lie on the Suez canal. In Suez, at least eight people were killed in clashes with police.

Many ordinary Egyptians are frustrated by the violence that have hurt the economy and their livelihoods.

"They are not revolutionaries protesting," said taxi driver Kamal Hassan, 30, referring to those gathered in Tahrir. "They are thugs destroying the country."

Obama says struggling over whether to intervene in Syria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said he has been wrestling with the question whether a U.S. military intervention in Syria's 22-month-old civil war would help resolve the bloody conflict or make things worse.

In a pair of interviews, Obama responded to critics who say the United States has not been involved enough in Syria, where thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced according to U.N. officials. Transcripts of both interviews were released on Sunday.

The United States has called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, and has recognized an opposition coalition - but has stopped short of authorizing U.S. arming of rebels to overthrow Assad.

"In a situation like Syria, I have to ask: can we make a difference in that situation?" Obama said in an interview with The New Republic published on the magazine's website.

Obama said he has to weigh the benefit of a military intervention with the ability of the Pentagon to support troops still in Afghanistan, where the United States is withdrawing combat forces after a dozen years of war.

"Could it trigger even worse violence or the use of chemical weapons? What offers the best prospect of a stable post-Assad regime?

"And how do I weigh tens of thousands who've been killed in Syria versus the tens of thousands who are currently being killed in the Congo?" he said.

Obama's comments come as world leaders gathered in Davos, Switzerland, said they wished the United States were more engaged in geopolitical issues such as the conflicts in Syria and Mali, where France is attacking al Qaeda-affiliated militants.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Saturday that the United States will fly tankers to refuel French jet fighters, expanding U.S. involvement, which had been limited to sharing intelligence and providing airlift support.

In an interview with CBS television program "60 Minutes," Obama bristled when asked to respond to criticism that the United States has been reluctant to engage in foreign policy issues like the Syrian crisis.

Obama said his administration put U.S. warplanes into the international effort to oust Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, and led a push to force Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak from office.

But in Syria, his administration wants to make sure U.S. action would not backfire, he said.

"We do nobody a service when we leap before we look, where we ... take on things without having thought through all the consequences of it," Obama told CBS.

"We are not going to be able to control every aspect of every transition and transformation" in conflicts around the world, he said. "Sometimes they're going to go sideways."

(AP) ? Two European science projects ? one to map the intricacies of the human brain, the other to explore the extraordinary carbon-based material graphene ? won an EU technology contest Monday, getting up to ?1 billion ($1.34 billion) each over the next decade.

The projects were selected from 26 proposals.

"European's position as a knowledge superpower depends on thinking the unthinkable and exploiting the best ideas," European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes said in a statement. "This multi-billion competition rewards home-grown scientific breakthroughs and shows that when we are ambitious we can develop the best research in Europe."

The Human Brain Project will use supercomputers 1,000 times more powerful than those today to create the most detailed model ever of the human brain. Then the project plans to simulate the effects of drugs and treatments on the brain, for a better understanding of neurological diseases and related ailments.

In addition, the increased knowledge about how the brain works ? and how it manages billions of processing units and trillions of synapses while consuming no more power than a light bulb ?may lead to "a paradigm shift for computing," the European Commission, the European Union's executive branch, said in a statement.

"The economic and industrial impact of such a shift is potentially enormous," the commission said.

The leader of the project, Henry Markram, a professor of neuroscience at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale of Lausanne in Switzerland, said earlier this month that it could not be undertaken without this kind of funding.

"The pharmaceutical industry won't do this, computing companies won't do this ? there's too much fundamental science," Markram said. "This is one project which absolutely needs public funding."

The other project will investigate the possible uses of graphene, the thinnest known material, which conducts electricity far better than copper, is perhaps 300 times stronger than steel and has unique optical properties. A sheet of it is one atom thick; scientists call it the first known two-dimensional material.

Important future uses include the development of fast, flexible and strong consumer electronics, bendable personal communication devises, lighter airplanes, cars that use less energy and artificial retinas.

The project will be led by professor Jari Kinaret of the Chalmers University of Technology in Goteborg, Sweden.

"The story of graphene shows there is still wonder in science," Kroes said Monday at a news conference. "It's like a miracle."

In 2010, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to two scientists at the University of Manchester in Britain "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene."

"So, you've heard of Silicon Valley," Kroes said. "'Where in Europe wants to be known as 'Graphene Valley?' That's the billion-euro question I am putting to you today."

Each of the projects will initially receive ?54 million ($73 million) from the European Union's research budget, an amount that will be matched by national governments and other sources. Further funding will depend on whether they reach certain milestones within the first 30 months, but over a decade it could total ?1 billion ($1.34 million) each.

In this age of government austerity, the commission promised to monitor the projects carefully so they continue "to be an efficient use of taxpayers' money."

The winners were selected by a panel of 25 experts, including professors, scientists and Nobel winners.

The Funeral Director: The Heart of a Family's Experience : Funeral ...

You are here: Home / Editorials / The Funeral Director: The Heart of a Family?s Experience

Technology continues to change our industry. The equipment and processes we use are more advanced. Options we can offer our families ? from web-based viewings to QR codes on headstone ? were unheard of just a handful of years ago.

Yet one fundamental service we provide to families is what they will most remember. Our caring, sympathetic, wise support is something technology will never replace. It is the reason the funeral director is the pulse of a family?s experience when faced with the death of a loved one.

?People believe funeral directors care for the dead. We know that we are caring for the living,? observes licensed funeral director and embalmer Jane Ludlow of Thomas-Justin Funeral Home in Cincinnati, Ohio. It?s a message she lives every day ? and one she shares with those new to the profession, as she did recently as the commencement speaker at her alma mater, Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. She urged the graduates to keep in mind that choosing how they deal with families should be as important as choosing the right fluids for embalming. ?For us, the fear and mystery of death have subsided, but not for client families who have seen their children, parents, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters die.?

Ludlow points out that families need a funeral ?director? who will direct them with knowledge, understanding and a calm confidence. ?We must show them how to take one step. Then show them how to take one more,? she reminds. ?Before they realize it, we will have started them on their way. We will have directed them toward their healing and we will have lived up to our oath.?

Marsha Chance, funeral director and family service advisor at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee, agrees. ?I think of myself as a shepherd, taking families from where they are to where they need to be, and being a shoulder they can lean on throughout the process.?

Her experience of suddenly losing her young husband gives her a 360-degree perspective. ?Although I was in the industry, when my husband died I was like every other grieving person, uncertain which steps to take next,? Chance explain. ?It?s amazing how you go back to zero when something rocks your world.? Today, many families find comfort and a special bond when she says, ?I sat where you?re sitting. I really do understand what you?re going through.? It took a while for her to reach the point where she could share her story and now she sees it as a way to bond with people genuinely and honestly. ?People want to make a human connection, to recognize that we are comrades on the same battlefield. I was always sympathetic. Now I?m empathetic.?

Norman Berry, a licensed funeral director and founder of Berry Funeral Home and Crematory in Elberton, Georgia, recognizes that due to his small-town location he often extends his support in different ways than his colleagues in larger markets. ?As a family-owned funeral home and crematory, we answer all of our calls personally, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year,? comments Berry. ?Our client families aren?t comfortable getting a recorded message ? they want to connect with someone immediately. We can be ready within 30 minutes.? And sometimes those middle-of-the-night calls are responses to families located several towns away, some as far as Atlanta.

?Our families have been hit hard by the economy and their funds are limited. We keep our profit margins slim, so we are almost always significantly less expensive than our competitors. And that?s important to us,? says Berry. If people say they don?t have the money, he works with them, delaying the disposition until funds are available. Berry added a crematory to his business a year-and-a-half ago and many families are selecting direct cremation as a cost-effective option. And no matter what the circumstances, he buries children under 12 at his cost, often supplying extra touches at his own expense, like bouquets of colorful balloons in the child?s favorite colors.

?I make a point of avoiding words that are sometimes harsh for families to hear, like embalming, and I personally prepare all of the bodies for viewing,? he says. When first entering the business, Berry went to beauty college to learn makeup techniques that result in a natural look. And if he has to, he?ll even style hair, but recommends using the deceased?s regular beautician. He chuckles remembering how his male friends laughed when he enrolled, but the knowledge has paid off.

While recognizing that they have helped families through a most difficult time with support, assistance and guidance is satisfying, funeral directors can be faced with challenges when offering their help, too. Some families and individuals come with preformed attitudes about the death-care profession. ?People sometimes are surprised that we are sympathetic, living, breathing people with normal emotions,? says Chance. Others who are bereaved come with anger and frustration. ?I understand that they are angry to be in the situation, particularly when it?s a difficult case, like a violent or accidental death, the death of a child or other tragedy, so I don?t take it personally.?

?Everyone deserves to be remembered.? That?s Chance?s message as she guides her families through the difficult process of making choices. It?s a message that comes from her heart.
While technology continues to provide innovative ways to do business, the heart of our industry is, literally, our heart. How we support and guide families on the road to healing will always be our most necessary ? and appreciated ? service. FBA

Jet fuel, plastics exposures cause disease in later generations; Reproductive diseases, obesity

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Washington State University researchers have lengthened their list of environmental toxicants that can negatively affect as many as three generations of an exposed animal's offspring.

Writing in the online journal PLOS ONE, scientists led by molecular biologist Michael Skinner document reproductive disease and obesity in the descendants of rats exposed to the plasticizer bisephenol-A, or BPA, as well DEHP and DBP, plastic compounds known as phthalates.

In a separate article in the journal Reproductive Toxicology, they report the first observation of cross-generation disease from a widely used hydrocarbon mixture the military refers to as JP8.

Both studies are the first of their kind to see obesity stemming from the process of "epigenetic transgenerational inheritance." While the animals are inheriting traits conveyed by their parents' DNA sequences, they are also having epigenetic inheritance with some genes turned on and off. Skinner's lab in the past year has documented these epigenetic effects from a host of environmental toxicants, including plastics, pesticides, fungicide, dioxin and hydrocarbons.

The recent PLOS ONE study found "significant increases" in disease and abnormalities in the first and third generations of both male and female descendants of animals exposed to plastics. The first generation, whose mother had been directly exposed during gestation, had increased kidney and prostate diseases. The third generation had pubertal abnormalities, testis disease, ovarian disease and obesity.

The study also identified nearly 200 epigenetic molecular markers for exposure and transgenerational disease. The markers could lead to the development of a diagnostic tool and new therapies.

The Reproductive Toxicology study exposed female rats to the hydrocarbon mixture as their fetuses' gonads were developing. The first generation of offspring had increased kidney and prostate abnormalities and ovarian disease. The third generation had increased losses of primordial follicles, the precursors to eggs, polycystic ovarian disease and obesity.

The study, said Skinner, "provides additional support for the possibility that environmental toxicants can promote the epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease."

"Your great-grandmothers exposures during pregnancy may cause disease in you, while you had no exposure," he said. "This is a non-genetic form of inheritance not involving DNA sequence, but environmental impacts on DNA chemical modifications. This is the first set of studies to show the epigenetic transgenerational inheritance of disease such as obesity, which suggests ancestral exposures may be a component of the disease development."

The Business Travel Bad & Ugly? Because There Ain?t Anything Good About It

by Robert Wagner

I?m currently travelling for business reasons. I do this rather often, though fortunately not as much as I used to. I?ve been pretty much everywhere at one time or another and I can honestly say that I?ve yet to be bitten by the ?hey look at me, I travel a lot so I must be important? bug.

I?d rather be at home actually.

That said, I?ve been pondering a few things this trip:

  • How is it that in 2013 there are still airport security personnel that don?t know what a ultrabook, ultraportable laptop, or MacBook Air is and don?t understand that they don?t contain a physical hard drive. And no matter how many times you look at that cool little cheat sheet with the diagram of a 2003 Dell Inspiron, you?re not going to find all of those same parts when you examine my Mac?
  • When will airport security make up its mind whether or not the iPad is or is not a laptop and instruct me to either keep it in my bag or remove it accordingly? I don?t care which way you want to go, just standardize your goddamn rules.
  • How is a small tube of toothpaste any less deadly than a large tube of toothpaste?
  • Why do hotels that refer to themselves as ?resorts? always have scratchier towels and impossibly cheaper bottles of budget brand soap, shampoo, and conditioner?
  • When will I learn to bring my own soap, shampoo, and conditioner?
  • How come my shitting schedule gets thrown out the window simply because I sat on my ass for several hours and got out of my chair in a different time zone? And what is the best way to return it to normal?
  • Why is it legal for powdered eggs to be called eggs at all?
  • Who are these Road Warriors? that are satisfied with only 2 cups of shitty hotel room coffee? Sure, it says it makes 4 cups but that?s only if you?re drinking it out of DIXIE? Brand 3oz. containers.
  • Is my wifi-only iPad mini really going to make the plane crash if I?m reading a book on it during takeoff? If so, I demand that the tree-hating assholes reading paperbacks be required to put their books down during takeoff and landing ??and we should all sit upright and stare straight ahead like the little lemming-zombies you want us to be.
  • Why can?t I pay for the in-flight high school cafeteria quality food with cash? Or, better still, why do you hire flight attendants that can?t be trusted to: a) make correct change, and b) not steal from you.
  • Is there anywhere I can fly directly to from Portland International Airport? I hate stopovers.
  • Why does it seem like half of the females over 30 take business travel way too seriously? The other half are casual and friendly, what the fuck is your excuse for acting like you?re all that ? you?re in economy class, honey, sit down and shut up. No one is impressed.
  • (Continued) Why is it that those same self-important females over 30 act like they haven?t had sex in a decade and try to touch, fondle, flirt with, and fuck every other guy in the room?
  • (Continued) And finally?why do those same women (yes, I?m still on this, sorry) act so put off when you decline their advances? I?m sorry you?re hideous and live a meaningless existence but that?s no excuse to be a fucking asshole to someone just because they don?t want to ?go for a few drinks and see where it leads.? I know exactly where it leads ??and I?m sure a few hundred other men probably do too. Go away. Stay away. Fuck off.
  • Why does the familiarity of McDonald?s seem so goddamn comforting just because I?m away from home? I don?t eat it when I am at home, so why does it remind me of home?
  • The wireless carriers lie ??their coverage is pretty much spotty and shitty everywhere.
  • Why must I always call my bank before I travel so that they don?t shut off my debit and credit cards? Seriously, they should know by now that I travel from time to time ??it?s none of their fucking business when or where.

Bon Voyage, bitches.

Individualized Fitness Programs for Seniors - Daytona In Home Care ...

Holiday gatherings when Mom is still trying to play hostess after recovering from an illness and Dad is struggling to be the life of the party, even as his dementia is worsening, often highlight an older adult?s frailties more so than any other times of the year. Even families of healthy older adults could begin to see changes from year to year.

Some of what?s happening can be attributed to the effects of aging such as a loss of balance, muscle strength and flexibility. A lot of seniors deal with conditions that make standing for long hours baking and cooking more difficult. Other seniors experience an inability to recognize pain.

That?s why building back strength can be so important. I would suggest developing an individualized fitness program, if the doctor approves. Many seniors have more than one chronic condition and are dealing with osteoporosis and arthritis, which can make moving more difficult. Strength exercises can be good for arthritis sufferers, helping them strengthen their muscles to do the work again.

Home Care Service Many seniors also prefer exercising with other older adults ? at least that?s what those seniors who come to EngAge Wellness, located in the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging, tell us. We focus on whole person wellness ? incorporating social, physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and vocational.

Diet is another way to help keep older adults on track. Everything in moderation, as they say.

It?s important for those who might be preparing a holiday meal to keep their senior family members? dietary needs in mind. Look for salt substitutes and ways to replace higher-fat ingredients with more healthy alternatives.

For example, some cake recipes allow replacing butter with a healthy option, such as applesauce, or using sugar substitutes or sugar-free ingredients. One popular brownie recipe even calls for using the healthy high-fiber option of black beans?just don?t tell guests what they?re eating if you think they might not find such an ingredient appetizing.

Finally, learn from your senior loved one, and his or her doctor, the warning signs that could indicate trouble. If an older adult is diabetic, watch for the signs that would mean blood sugar is too high or too low. If Mom has congestive heart failure, look for swelling in the feet and possible trouble breathing.

Exercise and wellness are just as important for busy family caregivers. I?d recommend a program for caregivers, too, along with participating in a class like Tai Chi to relieve stress. Practicing wellness leading up to and during the holidays can help make the new year brighter for both seniors and caregivers.

For more information or to get answers to your questions, please contact your Home Instead Senior Care office serving The Daytona, FL area.?

Best CompTIA Certifications | WordPress Aisle

CompTIA provides series of certification courses to cover a spectrum of skills required to stand as a top notch expert. An announcement was made by this leading vendor in August 2012 for adding performance based questions to already existing (traditional, situational and identification type) questions of its most valued certification; CompTIA A+. The certification is an entry level certification which proves an individual?s skills and expertise of installing, maintaining and optimizing personal computers and validates a Computer service professional?s knowledge.

CompTIA A+ certification in the past had a life time durability which happened to change in 2011. This wasn?t a new implementation as certifications change with the change in technology and its requirements. The topics covered by them also change according to the set of requirements of specific devices, similarly understanding the importance of hands on experience and practical approach towards IT industry; CompTIA decided on adding performance based questions to test the skills and build experts in demand. The announcement had a video presentation in September 2012 with title ?CompTIA Exams: The Candidates Experience on YouTube?.

This video was addressed to candidates who planned on acquiring CompTIA A+ Certification, since the changes to be made were specifically for A+ exam. The video on the whole did not deliberately explain the context of the exam, but gave examples of questions that could help develop an understanding of exam format. The video however does provide all the tricks and tips for managing an exam experience and especially when management of questions becomes focus. The addition of performance based questions will also be implemented on CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ exams as well but later in 2013.

CompTIA A+ certification requires clearance of two tests; CompTIA 220-801 and CompTIA 220-802, the details of the two certification exams are as follows:

CompTIA A+ 2201-801 Certification Exam

The 220-801 A+ exam is an integral part of acquiring CompTIA A plus certification and proves an individual?s capability of being an entry level IT pros with good skills and knowledge of computer, security, network, as well as set of communication skills. For working in an advanced technical environment the exam equips the candidate with skills of configuring, installing and maintaining computer parts; repairing and replacing laptop components knowledge; printers know how, commands and troubleshooting understanding, SOHO networks installation and configuration knowledge, in depth understanding of security issues.

The exam consists of 100 questions with a given time of 90 minutes to pass the test and id based on linear, fact based, multiple choice and performance based questions. In order to acquire A Plus Certification this exam is the first step and clearance of this test earns you credit towards acquiring the main certification.

CompTIA A+ 220-802 Certification Exam

The 220-802 exam is the extension of the knowledge and skills acquired from the first exam. It validates an individual?s capabilities of having hands on understanding for applying tools and troubleshooting in scenarios where the practical approach is required for resolving issues. This certification exam equips an IT pro with in depth technical understanding of computer technology, security and networking. The communication skills acquired through the first exam are mastered with this second exam and results n professionalism.

The exam targets operating systems, mobile devices, security and troubleshooting knowledge. It?s based on 100 questions with the same time and format as the 220-801 exam.

A successful candidate who clears both the exams acquires CompTIA A+ Certification and sets a beginning for a great career. This certification has always been the way for knowing your stuff and when the entire IT industry is in demand of professionals who have skills which are practical then A+ would be your choice. Whichever track you want to trail in future, you can start with this certification and grasp a-bit-of everything knowledge.

S&P 500 passes 1,500 for first time since 2007

2 hrs.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index traded above 1,500 for the first time since December 12,?2007 following a sudden drop in claims for unemployment benefits, another sign that the labor market is healing.???

The index has not closed at 1,500 since Dec. 10, 2007, just months before the implosion of big Wall Street banks would send the major averages crashing to decade lows.

While many traders usually dismiss the big, round market?numbers as having little meaning from a fundamental or technical standpoint, eclipsing this mark could be different.?

"It's psychological more than anything," said Justin Wiggs, vice president of trading at Stifel Nicolaus. "If we stay above 1,500 it could bring some incremental dollars off the sidelines."

The move past 1,500 comes as investors have been showing more confidence in stocks, finally taking some of the $2.7 trillion lying dormant in low-yielding money market funds and pumping it into equities.

"To the degree that those are sticky investments and those dollars stay in equities, that will be a trend we'll be watching here in the first quarter," Wiggs said.

Market veteran Art Cashin, the floor operations manager for UBS, said the mark could be significant as the "bulls need a breakout punch like S&P through 1500."?

The market's stubborn march higher despite the array of factors against it - weak earnings, political tensions in Washington and a European recession to name three - have market bears feeling fairly helpless.

"This is a very frustrating market," said Kathy Boyle, president of Chapin Hill Advisors. "It's times like this when I feel like throwing in the towel. That's when I feel like I should stick to my guns."?
