iRobot reorganizes, forms new unit focused on Ava and other emerging technologies

iRobot has been branching out from its traditional household and military robots for quite a while, and it looks like it's now officially embracing those activities as a core part of its business. The company announced a reorganization (or "strategic realignment") today that will see it comprised of three different business units: Home Robots, Military Robots and Emerging Technologies. That last group includes things like the Ava mobile robotics platform, which iRobot hopes will eventually be used in everything from healthcare to retail to security applications. Alongside that news, the company also announced a bit of an exec shakeup, with Home Robots President Jeffrey Beck being named Chief Operating Officer, and former COO Joseph Dyer switching roles to become Chief Strategy Officer. The company's official announcement can be found after the break.

Elsevier vows to keep price of mathematics journals low

Jacob Aron, reporter

Journal publisher Elsevier has announced changes in the pricing of its mathematics titles, and withdrawn support for a controversial, proposed US law, which has subsequently been scrapped. Both moves follow a boycott of the company's journals, which was led by mathematicians who objected to Elsevier's prices and its support for the legislation.

David Clark and Laura Hassink, senior vice presidents for physical science at Elsevier, which is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, have written a letter to the mathematics community explaining the price changes. "Some of these are new initiatives, and some reflect changes that we have been working on over a longer period," they write.

Elsevier is owned by the transnational Reed Elsevier, as is Reed Business Information, publisher of New Scientist.

The company says the target for its core mathematics titles is a price of $11 or less per article, which would place it below most university presses, some societies and its commercial competitors. "Where journals are more expensive than this, we will lower our prices," says the letter.

It has also opened the archives of 14 mathematics journals, offering free access to articles published more than four years ago back to 1995, when the company began publishing digitally. "All current and future papers featured in these journals will become free to read, for subscribers and non subscribers alike," say Clark and Hassink.

On 27 February, Elsevier also announced that it had withdrawn its support for the Research Works Act, a proposed US law that aimed to prevent government-funded researchers from being required to publish in open-access journals. The same day, the bill's sponsors in Congress, Darrell Issa and Carolyn Maloney, said they would no longer pursue the legislation.

"The American people deserve to have access to research for which they have paid," according to a statement released by the pair. "This conversation needs to continue, and we have come to the conclusion that the Research Works Act has exhausted the useful role it can play in the debate."

Timothy Gowers, a University of Cambridge mathematician who initiated the boycott, posted his reaction to the announcements on the social networking site Google+: "These are welcome changes, but they don't exactly change the publishing landscape. Having said that, they also claim that this is just the beginning."

The boycott has garnered more than 7,500 signatures, many from academics working outside of mathematics. Signees vow not to peer-review or submit papers for any of Elsevier's scientific journals.

Red ribbons in remembrance of school shooting victims encircle a maple tree above sap collecting buckets on the square in Chardon, Ohio Tuesday, Feb. 28, T.J. Lane, 17, admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol to Chardon High School along with a knife and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table Monday morning, Prosecutor David Joyce said. Three of the five students wounded in the attacks have since died. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

(AP) ? The 17-year-old suspect in a deadly shooting rampage at an Ohio high school appeared briefly in juvenile court as residents of the shaken community offered sympathy and support for families and friends of the three students who were killed and two who were wounded.

A prosecutor described suspect T.J. Lane as "someone who's not well" and said the teen didn't know the victims but chose them randomly.

Lane admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol and a knife to the 1,100-student Chardon High School and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table Monday morning, prosecutor David Joyce said.

Authorities offered their own condolences Tuesday and shared a nugget of welcome news, announcing that an 18-year-old girl who was hurt in the shootings had been released from the hospital and was home with family. The second injured teen remained in serious condition at a suburban Cleveland hospital.

Those trying to understand what prompted the shootings got few answers from the court hearing, which came hours after the death toll rose to three.

Lane, a thin young man described by other students as extremely quiet, spoke little in court, where a judge ordered him held for at least 15 days.

Lane's grandfather, who has custody of the teenager, and two aunts joined him in court. The women lightly embraced the older man as the hearing began.

Prosecutors have until Thursday to bring charges and are expected to ask that Lane be tried as an adult. He will probably be charged with three counts of aggravated murder and other offenses, Joyce said.

The prosecutor appeared to rule out rumors and speculation that the young gunman lashed out after being bullied or that the shooting had something to do with drug-dealing.

"This is not about bullying. This is not about drugs," Joyce said. "This is someone who's not well, and I'm sure in our court case we'll prove that to all of your desires and we'll make sure justice is done here in this county."

Joyce would not elaborate. Both sides in the case are under a gag order imposed by the judge at the prosecutor's request.

The judge also barred media outlets from taking photos of the faces of the suspect and some of his relatives. The Associated Press transmitted photos and video of Lane that were shot before the hearing. The AP and at least one other media outlet, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, plan to challenge the judge's order Wednesday.

Meanwhile, area schools offered grief counseling to students, staff and others shocked by the rampage.

"We're not just any old place, Chardon," Chardon School Superintendent Joseph Bergant II said. "This is every place. As you've seen in the past, this can happen anywhere, proof of what we had yesterday."

Authorities said Tuesday that Demetrius Hewlin, 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, had died from their injuries. Daniel Parmertor, 16, died shortly after the shooting.

Hewlin attended Chardon High. King and Parmertor were students at the Auburn Career Center, a vocational school, and were waiting in the Chardon High cafeteria for their daily bus when they were shot.

Lane's family is mourning "this terrible loss for their community," Lane's attorney, Robert Farinacci, said in a statement.

Fifteen-year-old Danny Komertz, who witnessed the shooting, said it appeared that the gunman singled out a group of students sitting together. He said Lane was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied. But other students disputed that.

Farinacci told WKYC-TV that Lane "pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and has never been in trouble over anything that we know about."

Lane did not attend Chardon High but waited there for the bus to Lake Academy, a school for students with academic or behavioral problems. Authorities would not say how and why he ended up at Lake Academy.

Student Nate Mueller said he was at the cafeteria table where the victims were shot, and a bullet grazed his ear. Mueller told The Plain Dealer that King ? one of those killed ? had recently started dating Lane's ex-girlfriend.

Lane "was silent the whole time," Mueller said. "That's what made it so random."

Kala Day, 18, said she rode the morning school bus with Lane and knew the victims.

"He always sat by himself and, like, looked out the window. So I sat with him a few times, because I felt bad for the kid," she said. "He didn't talk. He just stared out the window."

The shooting sent students screaming from the building in panic, and some of that chaos and fear was captured in 911 recordings released Tuesday.

"We just had a shooting at our school. We need to get out of here. Oh, my god," one crying female caller told a dispatcher.

"Everyone's running away," the caller added.

Another caller, a male student, instantly identified the gunman as Thomas Lane, a student, and said he appeared to be shooting at random.

"What was his beef with these kids? Do we know?" the dispatcher asked.

"I have no idea," he said, adding: "He's very quiet and he doesn't really talk to anyone."

Frank Hall, an assistant high school football coach who has been hailed as a hero by students who say he chased the gunman out of the cafeteria, told a Cleveland TV station that he couldn't discuss what happened, but added: "I wish I could have done more."

When to Refinance a Mortgage | Rai Chertkoff Real Estate Guides

Mortgage Refinance

Most people know just enough about refinancing to be cautious. Here is some information that can help the process along. Going through with refinancing without knowing the basics can lead to disaster. Don?t make a huge mistake by rushing into refinancing without knowing what you are doing or how you will benefit.

There are many homeowners who are thinking of refinancing in order to help reduce their monthly cost of their current mortgage loan. Throughout this article we will go over how and when to refinance. These recent days have brought interests rates to about 6%. Those homeowners who purchased their homes when rates were higher can benefit a great deal from the lower interest rates if they were to refinance.

When to Refinance

Refinancing worked a bit differently in the past. It was said that one should wait to refinance their mortgage until they can lower their rate by at least 2%.

However in today?s world it is recommended to refinance whenever the rates drop lower than your current rate.

Two reasons why this no longer applies.

Biggest reason this no longer applies is that the rates back in the 1980s were much lower than they are today. Refinancing from 7% to 6% is equivalent to refinancing from 14% to 12%. When refinancing you must make sure that the cost of refinancing is worth the end savings.

These days there are advertisements for mortgage refinancing and whenever you notice one that offers a lower rate than you current loan look into it. It will be worth investigating if you can save a few hundred dollars a month.

Knowing when to refinance if never a for sure thing.

Are interest rates as low as they are going to get? No one knows for sure so it can be a bit intimidating but with some patience and with a little research refinancing should be a helpful tool not a harmful one. Know what you are doing and make sure those benefits outweigh the cost of refinancing. Refinancing can be the answer that you have been looking for to get stable again.

In terms of enrollment, it ranks in the top five.

Two weeks ago the Hostos Dental Hygiene Program received notification of its re-accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), granting the status ?approval without reporting requirements?, which is an accreditation classification indicating that the program achieves or exceeds the basic requirements for accreditation. The Hostos Dental Hygiene program has continually received this top credit and has earned its reputation through steady diligence and excellence year after year.? The next accreditation site visit is scheduled for 2018.

?The CODA accreditation classification of ?approval without reporting requirements? confirms what we have known all along ? that the Hostos Dental Hygiene Program is outstanding and produces top-notch dental hygienists,? said Professor Joyce Dais, Hostos dental hygiene program coordinator.

Hostos President F?lix Matos Rodr?guez said dental hygienists with an associate in applied science degree from the College are highly educated professionals in one of the fastest growing fields in the nation. ?We are very proud of our graduates and this re-accreditation and top credit classification by CODA solidifies the reputation that already exists for the program,? he said.

On May 6, 2010, Hostos held a celebration for the fortieth anniversary of the Dental Hygiene Program.? The event honored Dean Emerita Anita Carter-Cunningham, who was recruited as one of the founders of the program, and Dr. Geraldine Perri, an alumna from the class of 1979, who is now the President of Citrus College in Los Angeles.? Dr. Perri is the first Hostos alumna to achieve this distinction.

Chamber's awards night honors contributions to business community

Winners of annual awards at the Logan County Chamber of Commerce meeting on Friday night were seated from left, Bob, Alexes and Ron Ertle of Ertle Brothers Discount Auto, Business of the Year; Back row from left, Michele Kaiser, Volunteer/Diplomat of the Year; Rob Nichols, Citizen of the Year; and Ben Blecha, Business Person of the Year. (Judy Debus/Journal-Advocate)

STERLING -- If there was such a thing as Oscar night for a Chamber of Commerce, the Awards Banquet and Annual Meeting of the Logan County Chamber on Friday night would fit the bill. Business associates, friends and family gathered to honor those that made significant contributions of support, leadership and service during 2010.

Honored as Citizen of the Year was Rob Nichols because of his outstanding leadership, commitment and service that has contributed to the cultural and economic health and welfare of Logan County. Nichols, of Nichols Tillage Tools, has served as a board member and president of the Logan County Economic Development Corporation. Along with having his own business in Logan County, he has worked to make the area attractive to other businesses wishing to relocate.

Ertle Brothers Discount Auto was named Business of the Year for their outstanding support to the Chamber and the community through contribution of time, financial donations, in-kind donations and involvement and promotion of programs and projects.

The Ertles are natives of the Sterling and Logan County area and were in the hay and grain business for 25 years. A few years ago, they put storage units on five acres of the 10 acres they own where their shop for working on their trucks and machinery was located.

Ertle Brothers Discount Auto came into being when they decided that since someone needed to be around all the time, they would try to sell a few cars and trucks and soon found that although they knew everyone in town, just taking a few orders was not all there was to the business.

It was then that the effort and the education began by the Ertle family to make the business a profitable one and become the most respected dealer in their community. In many of the classes they took, they were told that if you don`t make a profit, you can`t take care of your customers.

The dealership was named the 2008/2009 Colorado Independent Automobile Dealers Association`s (CIADA) "Quality Dealer of the Year."

Michelle Kaiser was named the Volunteer/Diplomat of the Year for her work to enhance playgrounds at Ayres and Campbell Elementary Schools. She wrote a Greater Outdoors Colorado grant on behalf the Tiger Cubs PTO for equipment and enhancements to the areas. She was also instrumental in fundraising efforts and working with the city on the grant. The PTO will also contribute $18,000 to the project.

Business Person of the Year is Ben Blecha, of KSTC/KNNG radio, who along with his work of sports broadcasting, instituted the "Pink Out Breast Cancer" campaign throughout the schools to raise money for the Northeast Colorado Cancer Resource Association. After years of donating thousands to the group, Blecha put his own hair on the line this year and offered to cut off one inch of his hair for every $1,000 raised for the Pantene(r) Beautiful Lengths to make wigs for cancer patients. Since there was $10,000 raised this year, Blecha donated 10 inches of his hair.

Keynote address of the evening was by Rich O`Connell, executive director of LCEDC who presented an update on resources available in the area. (See related story) Also addressing those gathered were outgoing president Rocky Joy; Greg Etl of the Department of Local Affairs, who presented a message from Governor John Hickenlooper; Executive Director Kim Sellers and incoming President John Sherman.

Sherman, of Viaero Wireless, noted that his plan for the 2011 year will be continuing to work with the Chamber to make Logan County a better place to live and work.

Serving on the Board of Directors for the Chamber for 2011 are Sherman; Joy, Coldwell Banker; Randy Brigham, Sterling Regional MedCenter; Kay Brigham Rich, Overland Trail Museum; Melanie Buckler, Equitable Savings & Loan; Andy Long, NJC; Doug Hadeen, Wells Fargo; Keri Wright, MV Equipment; Cheryl Walraven, Treasure by Chance; Alexes Ertle, Ertle Brothers Discount Auto; Jamey Mack, Pro Sports; Eric Van Wyk, American Family Insurance; Brett Webster, Wal-Mart; Kim Sellers, executive director; and Erin Neitzel, chamber assistant.

10 Reasons Moms Might Run Away from Home ? National Nannies

? 10 Benefits Employers Can Provide for Parents |
Posted on by admin | in Nannies

A recent article in a national magazine had everyone buzzing as it detailed the story of a mom who left her family behind. People wonder how it could ever be possible for a mother to leave her children. Fathers are known to walk out but mothers don?t have that reputation. However, there does seem to be a growing trend for moms to walk away even though it is still rare. Here, we look at a few causes as to why that may happen.

  1. Too much responsibility ? There is the chance that some women feel too overwhelmed with the responsibility that being wife and mother entail. The expectations of motherhood and being a perfect wife can get pretty high and this can cause enough stress to make a mom want to leave it all behind.
  2. Lack of commitment ? Not everyone who makes a family is committed to it. Just as fathers can lack a feeling of commitment to their families, mothers can feel the same way. The difference is that now more mothers are beginning to act on those feelings.
  3. Fear of parenting ? Raising a child can be a daunting task in the best situations. If you have a child with special needs or hyper activity the stakes are raised even higher. Some mothers are afraid that they might not be up to the task of doing a good job so rather than tough it out, they leave.
  4. Desire to pursue other goals ? Sometimes the greener pastures? call is so loud that it can?t be resisted. For some, being offered the dream job or once in a life time opportunity and having to leave your family behind to do so is just too good to give up.
  5. Knowing that Dad is a better parent ? There are some women who give up parenting. They just can?t handle it and they know that the children will do well and be nurtured and cared for sufficiently by Dad.
  6. Emotionally overwhelmed ? Postpartum blues can cause women to do things that don?t make any sense at all. This kind of depression can have devastating effects upon the family. Feeling emotionally overwhelmed can bring anyone down, but if a person is dealing with chemical or hormonal imbalances it only exacerbates the problem.
  7. Finances ? For some women who are experiencing serious financial difficulties, they may leave their children with the belief that they will have better life in the care of someone else. This is often true of mothers in third-world countries who abandon their children at orphanages.
  8. Personal problems ? Some mothers have serious personal problems that they need to work on and they may feel that they cannot manage to do that in the family setting. Gambling, drugs, and other addictions are a few examples.
  9. For love ? Unfortunately, in some cases, mothers have been known to walk away from their families in order to go off with a man. This, of course, has a devastating affect on children who can?t comprehend why she would love them less than this person who, to them, is a stranger.
  10. It?s the right thing to do ? There are women who know their limitations and being an effective parent is just not within their reach. Women who have violent tempers know that they may hurt their children under certain circumstances. They may actually walk away out of love for the children.

It?s really unfortunate that any parent would leave the family, but motherhood has traditionally been such an honored position that the thought of a mother leaving her children is unimaginable. And yet, the mores of society are changing so that more women are beginning to search beyond the family bounds for their fulfillment. Mothers who believe they can?t handle family life are running away, rather than trying to find the support they need to effectively parent their children.

Postal service downsizing plan cuts 35,000 jobs

The U.S. Postal Service announced plans on Thursday to close or consolidate 223 mail processing centers and eliminate up to 35,000 jobs as part of its strategy to cut costs by reducing its network of facilities.

The Postal Service has been losing billions of dollars each year as email chips away at mail volumes and as it faces massive annual payments to the federal government.

Postal officials said in September they would study more than 250 of the 461 processing sites for possible consolidation with other facilities as part of a series of cost-cutting steps. They also announced plans to end next-day delivery to cut back on overnight work.

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has said the agency needs to reduce $20 billion in annual costs by 2015. Moving processing away from the 223 centers would reduce operating costs by $2.6 billion annually, according to the Postal Service's website.

That includes eliminating as many as 30,000 full-time jobs and 5,000 non-career positions, USPS spokesman Sue Brennan said. The agency has gotten rid of about 140,000 jobs in the last five years, mainly through attrition, but still had about 650,000 workers at the end of 2011, according to its first-quarter financial statement.

None of the facilities would close before mid-May due to a temporary moratorium announced in December that is intended to give Congress time to pass legislation to help overhaul the mail agency.

The Postal Service, which does not receive taxpayer funds, wants Congress to eliminate an annual payment to prefund retiree health benefits and let it end Saturday mail delivery.

The agency also wants to take over its health benefits from the federal government and to close thousands of post offices.

Lawmakers have been deeply divided on whether to allow facility closures, end the prefunding payment and other measures. Some lawmakers have praised the Postal Service for "rightsizing" its network, while others say the planned closings will hurt the agency's business model.

"At a time when the Postal Service is competing against the instantaneous delivery of information from email and the Internet, slowing down mail delivery service will result in less business and less revenue," said Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont in a statement on Thursday.

Donahoe told lawmakers last week, in a letter announcing the agency's five-year turnaround plan, that failing to take all of its planned cost-cutting actions could lead to annual losses of $18.2 billion by 2015.

Nebraska Corn Kernels: What's with this 'Factory Farm' business?

Almost all of us have heard the words ?Factory Farming? before. It gets used a lot these days by groups who oppose modern agriculture, and unfortunately these words have now trickled down to the consumer. Groups that oppose modern agriculture use these words to portray agriculture as an industry that is full of pollutants, and an industry that doesn?t care about the land or the animals and is only concerned about profits.

These groups also believe that technology doesn?t belong in agriculture. They suggest that modern agriculture today is like a factory and that farming should return to how it was back in the 1930s, where everything was done by hand.

While their argument can be interesting, it is far from the truth. How can I say that one may ask? First, when I think of the word factory, I think of large buildings with smoke stacks and a gloomy sky. However, I have never seen this on a farm nor does it come to my mind when I think of farms. When I think of farming, I think of the family farmers who take care of both the land and their animals, and who work hard to feed a growing population. I think of farmers who are using new technologies, such as GM crops, to help conserve our resources for future generations. I think of the farmers who use housing to protect their animals from brutal weather conditions and also from predators. What I see farmers doing is trying to be innovative in the way food is produced for the growing world population. I mean, isn?t America all about innovation?

So the word use of ?Factory Farms? is nonsense in my opinion from the fact that factory farms don?t exist. What do exist are farms that are family owned. These farmers do care for the land and their animals. ?Not only are these farmers caring for their land and animals, but they care about their local communities. They are involved in local organizations and many of them make donations to support local projects. So next time you hear or see the words ?factory farming?, think about what I just said, and if factory farming means being innovative in smart ways, then it must be a compliment instead of criticism.

Will Obama's Koran-burning apology satisfy Afghans? (The Week)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The Week - The president says he's sorry about the U.S. military's "inadvertent" burning of Korans, which has already sparked violence claiming the lives of two U.S. soldiersAs violent anti-U.S. protests spread in Afghanistan this week, President Obama sent a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai apologizing for the unintentional burning of Korans by the U.S. military at Bagram Air Base. The Taliban argued that any U.S. expressions of regret were "mere slogans," and the Islamist militants urged Afghans to attack foreign military installations in "defense of our holy book." Angry crowds hurled rocks at several NATO bases, and a man in an Afghan military uniform reportedly shot and killed two U.S. soldiers. Will Obama's apology quell the uproar?

(AP) ? A prosecutor is preparing to file charges against a 9-year-old boy who brought a gun to a Washington state elementary school, wounding a young classmate when the gun accidentally went off.

The third-grader got the weapon, a .45-caliber handgun, from his mother's house, authorities said.

The boy was due in court for a preliminary hearing Thursday afternoon, nearly 24 hours after emergency crews responded to the school shooting.

Todd Dowell of the Kitsap county prosecutor's juvenile division said under state law children between 8 and 12 years old can face charges, if a court determines the child has the capacity to understand an act is wrong.

The boy's classmate, 8-year-old Amina Kocer-Bowman, remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound.

Authorities say the boy brought a gun to Armin Jahr Elementary, where it discharged from his backpack, piercing through and hitting Kocer-Bowman in the abdomen and arm. On Wednesday, Bremerton police characterized the shooting as accidental.

The boy was being investigated for unlawful possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault charges. Authorities believe he came into possession of the weapon during a visitation with his mother over the weekend, according to charging documents released Thursday.

Twenty-seven states have some form of firearm child access prevention laws. Such laws can include criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns, but Washington is not one of those states, according to the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence.

Gail Hammer, a law professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, said it is very rare for a child as young as 9 to be charged with a crime. Even if a young child is convicted, they wouldn't be sent to an adult prison, Hammer said

"Generally with young children they try to deal with it in the juvenile system," she said.

There have been shootings at schools that involved younger children. In 2000, 6-year-old Kayla Rolland, a Michigan first-grader, was fatally shot by a 6-year-old classmate who brought a gun from home. Last year, a 6-year-old kindergartner at a Houston elementary school accidentally fired a gun as he was showing it off to friends, injuring three students.

Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser said the school where Wednesday's shooting happened, with about 400 students, was open for classes Thursday with 10 counselors available to talk with teachers, students and parents.

She said the classroom where the shooting happened remains closed and that the students from that classroom have been moved.

The school is in a quiet residential neighborhood about 20 miles west of Seattle, across Puget Sound.

In the latest rating by the Brady Campaign, a national gun control advocacy group, Washington scored no points in the child safety category.

"Washington state is a loosely regulated state when it comes to firearms," said Gregory Roberts, executive director of Washington Cease Fire, a Brady Campaign affiliate.
