MINNEAPOLIS ? White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer told thousands of progressive activists at the Netroots Nation convention here that he understands why they are frustrated ? but he said the administration is frustrated itself with progressive critics not showing more gratitude for Barack Obama?s accomplishments as president.
?When Glenn Beck and John Boehner and Mitt Romney attack us, we expect that,? he said. ?And sometimes when our friends attack us, we get frustrated. It doesn?t mean it?s the right thing to do to get frustrated. We want you to push us. We absolutely do. The president is somebody who comes from a tradition of grassroots organizing, community organizing. A lot of the pushing that you guys are doing on a national level he did on a local level in Chicago, so he understands that.?

The difference between his governing and campaign rhetoric is the result of the realities of dealing with a Republican House and obstinate Democrats, Pfeiffer told the crowd.
?I promise you that he is the same person who you remember from the campaign trail, the same person from Springfield and Des Moines,? he said.
Pfeiffer stressed the trade-offs that the administration has had to make. He used this meme to defend the extension of the Bush tax cuts during the lame-duck session (to prevent a tax hike on the middle class) and the executive order upholding the anti-abortion Hyde Amendment during the health care debate (to get 30 million people health insurance).

?We?re all Democrats, and we understand the importance of making sure Democrats are in power,? she told him. ?But they might not turn out in the same way that they did in 2008. Some people are saying, ?I?ll show up on Election Day, but I?m not going to knock on doors. I?m not going to make phone calls. I?m not going to donate money??What?s in it for us in the second term??
