Prepping for Maternity Leave - Fisher Business Management

The birth of a baby is a magical experience but when you are a working mother
prepping for your maternity can take away from that magic, even more so when you?re
working one-on-one as a small business consultant. You may not even realize how
attached you are to your work until you have to pass it on to someone else for a while. I
have prepped for 3 maternity leaves, I have done it right and I have done it wrong. Here
are some things I did to make my most recent maternity leave as seamless as possible:

Communication

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I told the boss, Barb Fisher, and we
immediately started sketching out what the leave would look like. As my due
date neared, I started emailing her at least weekly with client updates. Once I
started having contractions and feeling like the birth may be close, those updates
became daily. My clients ended up being transitioned to Barb and others the
week before I actually went into labor.

Communication

Several people ended up taking over my work while I was out on leave. I think
this is very important. No one single person will be able to fill in for anyone
else, unless a temp is hired to fill in. Everyone here at Fisher was already busy
working full time, so really I had to split my clients between Barb and two other
Fisher consultants, while my Fisher duties were given to yet another consultant.

Letting Go

I have the utmost faith in all the Fisher consultants. But knowing that my clients,
some of whom I?ve had for 2 years, were going to be working with someone else
felt almost like letting my husband go on a date with another woman. The key
is to let go ? don?t try to be available from home immediately, give yourself the
right to spend time at home enjoying your baby! If during that time you choose to
check in, great, but don?t force yourself.

Prepping for Leave Yourself?

The Fisher group has been through the process of prepping for two maternity leaves in
the past 3 months, so we definitely can help ease you through this transition. If you?re
lost and don?t know how to delegate, or there are some communication problems,
or even an over-zealous new mom who is still trying to run things from afar, Fisher
consultants are here to help you sort it all out? or to become part of your team for a little
while if you need more support from within.
