Elite 8 Begins With Big East Matchup And Cinderella Story On Saturday

The Elite Eight features lottery picks, blue bloods and fittingly, a Cinderella not quite ready to go home. Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams and Ohio State's Deshaun Thomas might be the two best players left in the field not named Trey Burke, yet neither is featured in my key matchups today.

Here are the two matchups to watch on Saturday.

Marquette's Davante Gardner vs. Syracuse Bigs

Naturally, Syracuse point guard Michael Carter-Williams is a budding star at point guard, but the battle of the bigs will determine this game. Marquette's Davante Gardner is a load in the paint with surprisingly deft feet for such a big body, but the 'Cuse offers an extreme dose of length. Baye Keita and C.J. Fair are both awesome athletes and talented shot blockers, but Gardner got the best of them in late February. when the 6-foot-8 junior went 7-7 and scored a career-high 26 points.

Speaking of the Syracuse Orangemen -- who lost 74-71 in the teams' only meeting this season -- we turn to the vaunted 2-3 matchup zone, which stymied a super talented Indiana team and kept it to just 50 points, 30 below its season average. As a whole, Marquette's Golden Eagles aren't prolific from a distance, but if you don't at least make a couple early, that zone becomes awfully active.

Wichita State PG Malcolm Armstead vs. Ohio State PG Aaron Craft

Ohio State's Aaron Craft is the best on-ball defender in America alongside Indiana's Victor Oladipo, although he struggled to contain Arizona's Mark Lyons in the half-court. Wichita State's Malcolm Armstead is an elite playmaker whose somewhat awkward lefty game can be extremely tricky to defend.

Wichita State hasn't been to a Final Four since 1965 (its only appearance in program history), but has already defeated Pittsburgh and top seed Gonzaga. Ohio State meanwhile, has posted 11 consecutive victories and has a tremendous toughness about it that Craft fuels. One of the great things about the junior point guard is how well he contains dribble penetration, which is the key to Armstead's scoring ability, because he's such a special finisher in the lane. The Wichita State Shockers are a carbon copy of a classic Big Ten team because of how well they defend in the half-court and how physically they play, but Armstead has to have a 20-plus night in order to spring the upset.

Florida wins 62-50 to end FGCU's NCAA run

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? SEC champion Florida is going to its third straight NCAA regional final, while the improbable tournament journey for Florida Gulf Coast is over.

The Eagles, the No. 15 seed few people even knew of on Selection Sunday, had their season ended just before midnight Friday with a 62-50 loss to one of the big schools from Florida.

The high-flying team from "Dunk City" jumped out to an early 11-point lead. But the No. 3 seed Gators (29-7) and their roster filled with NCAA tourney experience were just too strong and too good. FGCU matched its season low for points.

Michael Frazier made a pair of 3-pointers from the left side, in front of the Gulf Coast bench, to start a 16-0 run late in the first half. Those were Frazier's only baskets of the game, but they came during a 4?-minute span when the Eagles (26-11) suddenly couldn't even get off a shot. They missed their only field goal attempt while turning the ball over four times in that span.

That slump finally ended when Sherwood Brown, their dreadlocked senior showman, made a layup in the final minute to get Florida Gulf Coast back within 30-26 by halftime.

But FGCU players walked down the steps off the raised court at Cowboys Stadium at the break with their heads down ? much different than the team that looked so loose and ready for a good time after an early 11-0 run ? similar to extended spurts they had in upsetting No. 2 seed Georgetown and No. 7 seed San Diego State.

The Gators play Michigan in the South Regional final at Cowboys Stadium on Sunday. They are trying to get to their first NCAA Final Four since consecutive national championships in 2006 and 2007.

Michigan overcame a 14-point deficit earlier Friday and beat No. 1 seed Kansas 87-85 in overtime.

After the Gators turned up the defensive pressure, the most fun team this side of the Harlem Globetrotters was suddenly having a lot fewer laughs. Those high-flying dunks and alley-oops weren't there and Florida forced 20 turnovers.

FGCU heads back to Fort Myers (aka Dunk City), where they have man-made lakes and a beach on campus, having given the tournament a blast of fresh air while its players were just having a blast. The south Florida state school also got about the best free publicity its administrators could ever hope for.

Mike Rosario led the Gators with 15 points, while Scottie Wilbekin had 13 and Casey Prather 11.

Brown led FGCU with 14 points, and Chase Fieler had 12.

Fieler started the Eagles' big run, the only one they'd have, with a 3-pointer from the top of the key before the kind of plays that earned their "Dunk City" moniker.

After Brett Comer stole a pass, he ran down the court and threw up an alley-oop pass for the trailing Brown, delivering a slam that sent the announced crowd of more than 40,000 into a frenzy ? except for those in Gator orange.

Comer then flipped another backward pass to Bernard Thompson for a 3-pointer. Then Fielder had another 3-pointer ? less than 3 minutes after the first one ? for a 15-4 lead only six minutes into the game.

Could the first No. 15 seed to make it into the round of 16 actually go further?

Not against Florida, the team that had been here so many times before. The FGCU run came too early, leaving the Gators plenty of time to recover.

After Frazier's second 3, Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield ? the gap-toothed coach married to a former model ? was angry when he called timeout and gathered his team together. The timeout and another attempted lob pass inside didn't stop the Gators surge.

Rosario knocked away the pass inside to Eric McKnight, sending the break the other way. Casey Prather grabbed an offensive rebound, and with his back to the basket, basically flipped the ball over his head and it went in.

McKnight missed two free throws after that, and Wilbekin penetrated for a short jumper to tie the game at 24. Rosario hit a go-ahead 3-pointer after a steal by Will Yeguete.

Eddie Murray had a steal for Florida Gulf Coast, but Patric Young took it right back and got it to Boynton. He made the layup while being fouled, and added the free throw for a 30-24 lead.

The Eagles has 12 turnovers in the first half ? one less than they had in each of their first two NCAA tourney games. They took twice as many shots (32-16) as Florida, but that wasn't enough.

There was still 10 minutes left on the halftime clock when FGCU returned to the court, and players started taking shots even as their mascot was on the court doing a halftime routine.

But Florida scored the first seven points of the second half. Boynton drove for a layup and was fouled before making the free throw. Rosario then drove for a shot off the glass and after another FGCU turnover had a floater that rattled in before Enfield called timeout with his team suddenly down 37-26.

But they never threatened and soon their NCAA run was over.

James Holmes plea rejected: Are prosecutors prepping for death penalty?

James Holmes would have pleaded guilty had he been spared death, but the proposal was rejected by prosecutors ? another sign they might be preparing to seek the death penalty.

Prosecutors are rejecting a plea agreement proposed by defense attorneys for James Holmes, the primary suspect in the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12 and injured 70 last July. The agreement proposes a guilty plea if Mr. Holmes does not receive the death penalty.

Without a guilty plea from Holmes, his mental health would likely be the big question mark in a potential trial. Indeed, prosecutors said in court documents Thursday that the plea they rejected was ?a calculated attempt? by the defense to convince the public that the criminal insanity defense has merit.

At an August hearing immediately following the shooting, Holmes's attorneys told a judge that his client was mentally ill and time was needed to assess the extent and nature of his illness. There were also references to a notebook the former University of Colorado graduate student shared with a school psychiatrist, in which he portrayed violent acts.

Prosecutors have long argued the notebook should be made trial evidence, but the defense says it is protected by physician-patient privilege. In a court document filed Thursday in Denver, prosecutors are accusing the defense of refusing to cooperate with document requests.

?The defendant knows that he is guilty, the defense attorneys know that he is guilty, and that both of them know that he was not criminally insane? is the inevitable conclusion of his crimes, they said.

The insanity defense will make the trial difficult for the prosecution because, in contrast to the vast majority of states, Colorado puts the burden of proof on the prosecution, rather than on the defense. That means prosecutors will have to prove that Holmes is not insane, which could be an arduous task in a case involving so many unusual variables, such as Holmes? bomb-rigged apartment, his orange-dyed hair, reports he told the police he was the cartoon villain the Joker, his heavy reliance on a psychiatrist and prescription medicine, and so forth.

Even faced with that task, however, the prosecution will not have a difficult case in proving Holmes knew what he was doing, says Daniel Filler, a former public defender who teaches criminal law at Drexel University School of Law in Philadelphia.

?While formally the burden of proof is on the prosecution, the reality is that juries are not typically very sympathetic to insanity claims,? Professor Filler says. ?It is important to distinguish the formal rules of law and what the practical challenges are. The reality is the prosecution has the winds at its back in arguing [Holmes] is not insane because, after a horrible crime, juries are not looking for a way to absolve the defendant.?

The trial will ultimately come down to ?a battle of experts,? he adds.

Arapahoe County prosecutor George Brauchler has said he will announce Monday whether he intends to seek the death penalty. There are clues that suggest he might be leaning toward that option. Mr. Brauchler added a death penalty lawyer to the prosecution team last month, and all three people on Colorado's death row were tried and sentenced in Arapahoe County.

The Holmes case has come as Colorado debated becoming the 18th state to repeal the death penalty. Though polls suggest that 68 percent of Coloradans support the death penalty, the legislature apparently had the votes to pass a bill. At a recent legislative hearing, Mr. Brauchler argued against repealing the sanction, saying, ?repeal of the death penalty makes it harder to find justice for the worst-of-the-worst cases.?

Earlier this week, Gov. John Hickenlooper said he would veto a bill to repeal the death penalty and support for the bill fell apart. It failed to pass a committee vote Tuesday.

Though the bill would not have affected the Holmes case ? it would have applied only to crimes committed after July 1, 2013 ? some experts suggest that it has? kept the issue before the public eye.

"The Holmes case is no doubt keeping the issue on the death penalty in Colorado because of his very visible prosecution," says Kyle Saunders, a political scientist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, in an e-mail.

Colorado has not executed a person since 1977.

? Staff writer Patrik Jonsson contributed to this report.

Microsoft: jQuery 2.0 Will Add Full Support For Windows Store Apps

3007.jQueryonWinRT_196B064BThe next version of jQuery, the popular JavaScript library, will drop support for Internet Explorer 6, 7, and 8, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft isn’t very bullish about getting developers to use jQuery 2.0 and HTML5 to develop “a new wave of jQuery-based Windows Store applications.” As Microsoft announced today, Microsoft Open Technologies, the company’s wholly owned open source-focused subsidiary, and the JavaScript experts at appendTo, have been working with the jQuery community to ensure that the next version of the framework offers full support for Windows Store applications. Developers could obviously already build Windows Store/Metro apps with jQuery, but thanks to this cooperation, the process for developing jQuery 2.0-based Windows Store applications should now be smoother, safer and more streamlined. As appendTo’s director of support Jonathan Sampson wrote in today’s announcement, jQuery always met the language criteria for Windows Store applications, but “Windows 8 exposes all the WinRT APIs within the HTML5 development environment, which comes with a new security model that made some code and common practices of jQuery flagged as unsafe in the context of a Windows Store application. AppendTo reviewed and re-authored portions of jQuery core to bring it into alignment with the Windows security model, as well as identified key areas where alternative patterns would need to be substituted for actually-used conventions.? Even though Microsoft has always stressed this in the run-up to the Windows 8 launch, quite a few developers are still unaware that they can use their web development skills to write desktop apps for Windows 8 and Windows RT. Developers, by the way, can already use a number of other open-source JavaScript frameworks, including backbone.js, Knockout.JS and YUI. As Deve Methvin, the president of the jQuery Foundation noted in a prepared statement today, that’s also something his organization is interested in. ?The jQuery team is excited about the new environments where jQuery 2.0 can be used. HTML and JavaScript developers want to take their jQuery knowledge with them to streamline the development process wherever they work. jQuery 2.0 gives them the ability to do that in Windows 8 Store applications. We appreciate the help from appendTo for both its patches and testing of jQuery 2.0 and MS Open Tech for its technical support.?

Wal-Mart tests in-store lockers for online orders | The Associated ...

SAN BRUNO ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will be testing this summer an option for consumers to be able to order product on its website and then have it kept in a physical locker at the store so they can pick it up without having to wait in line or talk to a store clerk.

The test, which will be conducted in about a dozen stories in an undisclosed market, is part of the world's largest retailer's overall strategy to offer increasingly demanding web-savvy shoppers the ability to shop any way they want. The company is also expanding its offerings online and improving a new "scan and go" shopping app so customers can immediately download coupons personalized to them.

Officials disclosed the moves Tuesday at a media event at its company's global e-commerce offices in San Bruno, Calif., located in Silicon Valley.

The six-story offices, which house more than 1,000 employees ranging from engineers to merchandisers, includes (at)WalmartLabs, where many of the shopping innovations are coming from. It was formerly a webs analytics company called Kosmix which the discounter purchased in 2011 and then renamed (at)WalmartLabs.

The offices are different from the staid, sprawling corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. Clearly, it looks like an Internet startup. On the floor housing employees at (at)WalmartLabs, some workers are playing ping pong and pool. On another floor, web analysts watch oversized screens of Walmart.com and Samsclub.com to track any technology problems with the site.

The company conducts so-called "hack days" twice a year where most of the staff are allowed to pursue prototypes of their own liking. At the end of the day, they must show their work.

"We are tenacious about building the best-in-class e-commerce. We're developing a density of talent that understands competition at Internet speed," said Neil Ashe, who joined the discounter as president and CEO of the company's global e-commerce division in January 2012. He had been president of CBS Interactive where he oversaw such online properties as cbs.com and CNET.com.

Wal-Mart used the one-day event to showcase how the discounter is meeting the challenges to fight off online rivals like eBay Inc. and amazon.com, which have been luring shoppers to the Web with their vast offerings of products and low prices. But the discounter is also following its own customers. More than half of its shoppers have smartphones and one third of its online traffic now comes from smartphones. For the holiday shopping season, that percentage figure was up to 40 percent.

Over the past year, Wal-Mart has been launching a number of initiatives that merge its online business with the power of its 4,000 stores. That's all with the purpose of meeting the company's overall mission of "saving people money so they can live better." That includes same-day delivery in five markets, and an app that allows shoppers to scan their purchases with an Apple device while in the aisle and then pay at a self-checkout terminal. In 10 months, it also rebuilt its search engine from scratch, and the improved search tool has resulted in an increase of the number of browsers to buyers on walmart.com by 20 percent.

Wal-Mart doesn't break down its e-commerce sales for the U.S., but officials reiterated Tuesday that it expects global e-commerce sales to hit $9 billion this year. That's still a small fraction of the company's overall sales of $443.8 billion in the latest year ended Jan. 31. But the company is fast expanding its global presence which include nine other countries outside the U.S. It's also making big improvements to its ranking among shoppers. For example, in Brazil, www.walmart.com is now the most popular retail website in terms of traffic, up from being ranked No. 8 last year. And the company is creating a global platform so that lessons in Brazil can be quickly adopted in other countries.

As for Wal-Mart.com's U.S. business, which sells more than 2 million items ? including products it sells through other retailers like ebags.com ? the company plans to expand the number of items. It didn't disclose by how much.

With the test of the new lockers, Wal-Mart is catering to shoppers who want to be left alone when they buy. Joel Anderson, president and CEO of walmart.com's U.S. division, says that 75 percent of its shoppers want to buy interrupted.

The new tests with lockers work like this: once shoppers buy the product online, they're emailed a password. They then can go to the store to pick up the items that are stored in the locker. Anderson says that lockers will vary in size, and the company is still figuring out where to locate them.

The service is an evolution of another shopping option called "site to store" launched in 2007 where shoppers can order online and then pick up the items at a special counter within two weeks. The company has also been testing an option where shoppers can pick up their purchases they bought online at select FedEx locations.

"The customer is in charge," Anderson. "The customer wants to control their own environment."

Researchers print biometric sensors directly on skin, make wearable health monitors more durable

Researchers print biometric sensors directly on skin, make wearable health monitors more durableMC10 might be best known for its wearable electronics aimed at athletes, but the company also makes a medical diagnostic sticker called a biostamp. Its creator (and MC10 co-founder), John Rogers has refined that design so that it's no longer an elastomer sticker -- now he can apply the biostamp's thin, stretchy electronics directly on human skin, and bond it with commercially available spray-on bandage material. By losing the elastomer backing of the original biostamp and applying the circuits directly to the skin, Rogers and his team at the University of Illinois were able to shave the device's thickness to 1/30th of the (already quite thin) biostamp. That super thin profile means it conforms even better to the contours of human hide and makes it shower- and swim-proof during the two weeks it lasts before being naturally exfoliated with your skin.

For those unfamiliar with what the biostamp does, it's a mesh of circuits and sensors that can record electrophysiological data like skin temperature and hydration state of the wearer. The new biostamp won't be in your doctor's tool box any time soon, however, as Rogers and his team are still refining the wireless power and communication technologies it leverages. Of course, once those problems are solved, there's a good chance we'll see MC10 turning it into a commercial product.

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg talks about her first salary negotiation ...

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg talks about her first salary negotiation at Facebook, and her first job review by Mark Zuckerberg

After mostly avoiding interviews for several weeks before the high-profile launch of her controversial book, ?Lean In,? Sheryl Sandberg broke her silence Sunday night with a pre-taped chat on the CBS program ?60 Minutes.? And while the interview was mostly friendly, Sandberg recounted some revealing anecdotes that she?s also shared in her book and recent speeches on the subject of women and their careers.

Arguing that the women?s revolution has ?stalled? ? she cites statistics that show women?s gains in top corporate jobs have slowed ? the Facebook chief operating officer contends that women must push themselves forward to advance their own interests, in spite of social conditioning to do the opposite.

To illustrate her point that women are often reluctant to negotiate for higher salaries, for example, Sandberg and her husband described their different reactions when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recruited Sandberg from a senior post at Google to run the business operations at Facebook. Sandberg says she was ready to take Zuckerberg?s first offer, but her husband, Dave Goldberg, and her brother-in-law convinced her to ask for a better financial package. (Ultimately, that package included enough shares in Facebook stock to make her a billionaire, at least on paper, before the company?s share price declined.)

?Not because the money mattered so much, but it was the principle,? said Goldberg, a former Yahoo executive who?s now CEO of the startup SurveyMonkey. ?I wanted Mark to really feel he stretched to get Sheryl because she was worth it.?

Sandberg also talks about her first six-month performance review from Zuckerberg. By her account, Zuckerberg told her, ?You?re biggest problem is you worry way too much about everyone liking you all the time.? According to Sandberg, her then-24-year-old boss told her that she would never make an impact unless she said something that at least someone disagreed with. ?It?s going to hold you back,? she says he warned her.

Those are just two of several instances in which Sandberg has acknowledged her own insecurities. At the same time, she says she was called ?bossy? as a child and says that?s partly why she wants to change the way society views women who assert themselves.

?This is deeply personal for me,? Sandberg told the CBS correspondent Norah O?Donnell. ?I want every little girl who someone says they?re bossy to be told instead, ?You have leadership skills.? ?

?Because you were told you were bossy?? asks O?Donnell.

?Because I was told that,? Sandberg says. ?And because every woman I know who was in a leadership position was told that.?

It may be noted that Sandberg only smiled modestly during the interview when O?Donnell remarked on her wealth and success and called her, at one point, ?one of the most powerful women in the world.?

And while saying it bothers her that there?s never been a woman president of the United States, Sandberg also brushed off O?Donnell?s question about whether she might run herself.

?I feel like I?m doing all the leaning in that I can do right now,? she said.

CBS has posted the interview and some additional video clips here, on?the??60 Minutes? website. Sandberg?s foundation, LeanIn.Org, has its own website. And here?s the Merc?s article on her book and the Lean In campaign.

Actor Stephen Baldwin may avoid jail in tax case

NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) ? A defense lawyer says prosecutors are not seeking jail time for actor Stephen Baldwin, who's accused of not paying his New York income taxes for three years.

There's a court conference Monday in the case against Baldwin, the youngest of the four acting Baldwin brothers.

The Rockland County district attorney's office said it is hoping a resolution can be reached Monday.

Baldwin, of Grandview, is accused of skipping New York taxes in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The district attorney said Baldwin owed more than $350,000 in tax and penalties.

His attorney, Russell Yankwitt, says he's been advised by the Rockland County district attorney's office that Baldwin can resolve the case without going behind bars.

Baldwin, who starred in 1995's "The Usual Suspects," has been free without bail.

Rent to own or rent/lease w/ option - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Owners who will consider rent to own/lease purchase are an extraordinarily small percentage - definitely well less than 1% and probably closer to 1 in 1000.?? Why is this?? Because when an owner wishes to sell they need to move on in their life and get out from the mortgage obligation so they can take the next step.? A person who is desperate related to their mortgage payment can't afford to consider rent to own in most cases.

Rent to own also tends to be a great way for the potential buyer to lose a lot of money.?

While the theoretical concept of rent with the option to buy may seem attractive, some of the realities are considerably less so.

Owners who will consider rent to own are very rare, so it will cut down your options for properties considerably.?? I consider it much smarter to spend a year or two working on improving your credit and (if necessary) saving up a good down payment.?? Yes, it is tough to move a couple of times but it even tougher to lose a lot of money attempting to buy.

Some features of rent to own:

1.? Down payment required - often substantial (say 10% or even 20%) and is non-refundable if the potential buyer doesn't purchase.

2.? Monthly rental is above fair market rent, with the only amount going to purchase is the amount above the fair market rent.? This is also not refundable.

3.? If not qualified for financing at the agreed upon? time and price, then you lose everything you've paid to date. ?

4.? The price is agreed upon at the beginning of the contract, and who knows where house prices are going.???

5.? You still depend on the owner to pay their mortgage.?? If they fail, you lose.

If you do get involved in this, please involve an attorney in the contract.

KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia (AP) ? Ivica Kostelic of Croatia won a rain-drenched World Cup slalom Sunday while Marcel Hirscher of Austria clinched the season title in the event after his sole rival skied out in the opening run.

Kostelic mastered the difficult conditions on the Podkoren course to finish in a total time of 1 minute, 45.81 seconds. Hirscher was 0.19 behind in second and fellow Austrian Mario Matt came in third, 0.34 behind Kostelic.

Hirscher led Felix Neureuther by 184 points going into the race. The German was left with no chance to make up the deficit when he straddled a gate in the opening run.

"I am totally relieved," said Hirscher, who won the giant slalom globe last season on his way to winning the overall title. "To win the slalom globe means a lot to me. I am more relaxed now. The small globe is important as I hadn't won this one before."

The Austrian turned 24 last week and is the youngest man to win the slalom globe since Kostelic in 2002. He is the seventh Austrian to win the title, more than any other country.

Hirscher has finished in the top three of all World Cup slaloms this season, making him the first man with eight straight slalom podiums since Italian great Alberto Tomba in 1991-92. Hirscher also placed second and first respectively in the two city events in Munich and Moscow, which counted for the slalom standings.

The Austrian leads Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal, who skipped the race, by 149 points in the overall standings with four events remaining at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

Ted Ligety, who won his fourth giant slalom title Saturday, finished 2.80 off the lead in 18th. In his first run, the American had a costly mistake that almost threw him off course at the fifth gate. He recovered to stay in the race but came in 3.87 behind.

"Miserable day for ski racing," Ligety wrote on Twitter, where he posted a photo of the spectators sheltering under umbrellas.

"It's been a tough day," Ligety said. "I didn't ski very well and these are really bad conditions."

Ligety earned 13 World Cup points to retain his third place in the overall standings, holding a 74-point lead over fourth-place Neureuther.

Alexis Pinturault of France opened the race on a rapidly deteriorating course and led the field by 1.45 seconds after the first leg, but failed to finish his final run. Kostelic, who was 1.51 off the lead, benefited from Pinturault's mistake to land his second victory of the season and 26th overall.

"This is a very emotional win for me," Kostelic said. "I have been training on this hill as a kid and have raced here more than anywhere else. The win means a lot to me. It was a tough day for all of us."

Kostelic, who won the overall title two year ago, said he would have tests for his recurring knee problems later Sunday but confirmed he will start in the World Cup finals.

Many racers were critical of the conditions. The snow had already been softened after days of mild temperatures. Rain made the course even weaker.

"As a late starter, you have no chance," said Austrian veteran Benjamin Raich, who failed to finish his first run. "The course is not holding up well. It's not dangerous but it's not fair, either."

Kostelic agreed, saying the race was "not fair for late numbers, but we have seen worse courses on the World Cup."

The slalom was the last event before the World Cup finals start Wednesday.

AP source: Obama poised to pick Perez for Labor

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is poised to select Justice Department official Thomas Perez to be the next labor secretary, according to two people familiar with the deliberation process.

Perez' nomination to the Labor Department could come as early as Monday, the people familiar with the process said Saturday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement has not yet been made. White House spokesman Matt Lehrich declined to comment.

Perez, 51, has led the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division since 2009 and previously served as Maryland's labor secretary. He is expected to have solid support from organized labor and the Hispanic community, which is eager to have Hispanic representation in Obama's cabinet.

Perez was the first Latino elected to the Montgomery County Council in Maryland, where he served from 2002 to 2006. If confirmed, he would replace Hilda Solis, who resigned in January to return to her native California.

Perez would come to the Labor Department as Obama pushes a major immigration overhaul, which could include changes in how employers hire guest workers. Labor Department officials have also taken a prominent role in supporting Obama's effort to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 an hour.

At the Justice Department, Perez has played a leading role in the agency's decision to challenge voter ID laws in Texas and South Carolina that could restrict minority voting rights. A federal court later struck down the Texas law and delayed implementation of the law in South Carolina until after the 2012 election.

Perez was easily confirmed by the Senate for his Justice Department post, but since then, some GOP lawmakers have criticized his role in persuading the city of St. Paul, Minn., to withdraw a lending discrimination lawsuit from the Supreme Court. In exchange, the Justice Department declined to join two whistle-blower lawsuits against St. Paul that could have returned millions in damages to the federal government.

The St. Paul case had challenged the use of statistics to prove race discrimination under the 1968 Fair Housing Act, and Justice Department officials were concerned the court could strike down the practice.

A letter last year from four Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Rep. Darrell Issa of California, criticized Perez for a "quid pro quo arrangement" that potentially cost taxpayers more than $180 million.

Falkland Islanders vote with an eye on Argentina - World news

STANLEY, Falkland Islands (AP) ? Britain is hoping this weekend's referendum on the political status of the Falkland Islands will push the United States and other neutral governments off the fence in its territorial dispute with Argentina over the remote South Atlantic archipelago.

The local Falkland Islands Government has mobilized a major effort to get as many of its 1,650 registered voters as possible to cast their secret ballots Sunday and Monday, preparing to send off-road vehicles, boats and seaplanes to remote sheep farms across the lightly populated islands.

Elections observers from Canada, Mexico, the U.S., Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and New Zealand also will be watching as islanders answer a simple yes-or-no question: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"

Islanders expect the answer to be overwhelmingly in favor of British governance and protection, a result they hope will put their own self-determination at the center of any debate about their future in the face of Argentine claims to the islands. Britain wants the U.S. in particular to recognize the islanders' rights, but Secretary of State John Kerry refused to budge during his recent visit to London.

"I'm not going to comment, nor is the president, on a referendum that has yet to take place," Kerry said, punting the question until after the results are announced Monday night. "Our position on the Falklands has not changed. The United States recognizes de facto U.K. administration of the islands, but takes no position on the question of the parties' sovereignty claims."

"Sovereignty" is a term that focuses on a territory more than its people, and it's the word Argentina often invokes while asserting its claim to the islands. Late Friday, Argentina's foreign ministry repeated its assertion that the islanders are an "implanted" people and that U.N. resolutions require Britain to resolve the dispute bilaterally, "taking into account the 'interests' (not the 'desires') of the inhabitants of the islands."

Britain prefers to refer to "self-determination," which focuses more on the people than the land they live on. The U.S. strongly endorsed self-determination for the people of South Sudan ahead of their 2011 referendum, which showed 99 percent wanted independence from their northern neighbor. President Barack Obama said during the Arab Spring uprisings that "the United States of America welcomes change that advances self-determination" for people in Egypt and Tunisia. The Palestinians and the Puerto Ricans have gained similar support for self-determination rights, and Obama even came out in favor of a UN declaration supporting self-determination for Native Americans.

The Obama administration also has expressed support for letting Puerto Ricans, who are U.S. citizens, determine their territory's relationship to the U.S., though the result of a referendum on the question last year was ambiguous.

But when it comes to the Falklands, which Argentines claim Britain stole from them nearly two centuries ago, and which the two nations fought a war over in 1982, Washington has always tried to take no side. US policy casts it more as a dispute over a territory than a population. This is why the referendum poses a potential dilemma for the U.S., diplomats and political scientists say.

"What we hope is that an act of self-determination in a free society, where people are able to vote as they did in Puerto Rico, is not something that anybody can dismiss or ignore," Britain's ambassador to Chile, Jon Benjamin, told The Associated Press. "It's a self-evident reflection of the will of the people. And that will be the case shortly in the Falkland Islands too. The people there have the right to choose how they are governed and under whose sovereignty."

Mark Jones, a Latin American politics expert at Rice University in Texas, called the U.S. position "tortured" and difficult to maintain. "It's hypocritical for the U.S. to deny the right of the Falkland Islanders to self-determination, while at the same time supporting that same right for a host of other groups throughout the globe. The referendum's clear-cut outcome makes the U.S. position increasingly untenable and difficult to justify," Jones said.

The Falkland Islands Government is a direct democracy and largely self-governing, although Britain handles its defense and foreign affairs, and the queen's representative has veto power over its decisions. So far, islanders have decided to keep their permanent population very small, making it very hard to obtain formal "islander status."

Excluding the British military and civilian contractors, the islands' population was 2,563 in last year's census, and only 1,973 of them had islander status. The referendum rules exclude anyone who lacks a British passport and hasn't lived in the islands for the last 12 months.

It boils down to 1,650 voting adults, a tiny electorate and one in which the voters all know each other ? and their parents and grandparents, some going back nine generations ? very well. There were no polls before the vote, but islanders interviewed by the AP predicted that nearly everyone would vote to keep things as they are.

Immediately following the vote, Falkland Islands lawmakers Sharon Halford and Mike Summers planned to arrive in Washington to lobby administration officials and members of Congress.

Associated Press writers Michael Warren in Buenos Aires and Luis Alonso Lugo in Washington contributed to this report.

Samsung Electronics exec blames Windows 8 for the decline of the PC

Jun Dong-soo isn't mincing his words. The Samsung Electronics head of memory chip business has a strong distaste for Microsoft's nascent Windows 8 OS, a viewpoint he made clear to reporters in Seoul, South Korea today. Addressing market research that indicates global PC shipments are on the decline, Dong-soo told reporters that the market segment has failed to see a boost from Windows 8 as it's "no better than the previous Windows Vista platform." Dong-soo even went on to link the poor attach rate for ultrabooks to Microsoft's "less competitive Windows platform." Unsurprisingly, this had led the Samsung exec to shift his division's focus from the fabrication of "conventional" memory chips to the more profitable and booming mobile chip segment. A move no doubt bolstered by the continued prominence of Samsung's Galaxy portfolio (e.g., Note II, GS II and upcoming GS IV). You have to hand it to Dong-soo, no one can accuse him of dealing in executive doublespeak.

Egyptian killed in Port Said clashes: medic | Morocco World News

PORT SAID, Egypt, March 8, 2013 (AFP)

An Egyptian protester was shot dead in overnight clashes in the restive city of Port Said when police fired on protesters outside their headquarters, a doctor said on Friday.

Karim Sayid Abdel Aziz, 33, died of a bullet wound to the head, said Dr Mohammed Arnous who treated him in a Port Said hospital. Abdel Aziz had been shot three times.

A medic told AFP that 73 people were wounded in the clashes, including five people who suffered bullet wounds and 19 who were hit by birdshot.

The clashes on Thursday resumed after protesters marched on the police headquarters, which they had already set ablaze on Tuesday, chanting ?the interior ministry are thugs,? an AFP correspondent reported.

Police fired tear gas and then birdshot as soldiers, deployed in the city since late January, moved in to guard the police building.

The unrest in the Suez Canal city, fuelled by January death sentences handed down to football fans over deadly rioting last year, flared again on Sunday, with six people, including three policemen, dying in the clashes.

Great Internet Marketing Tips For Great Marketers - Empower Network

Many people have had great success with internet marketing programs. By taking time to learn about affiliate marketing, you can also enjoy profits from this venture. This guide was made to help you maximize your potential in online marketing.

TIP! Wise investments promoting your business can pay off big in the world of affiliate marketing. One effective place you can spend is by purchasing ad space on websites that your potential customers frequent.

Affiliate marketers must be truthful about what they are doing. If you are endorsing a product that you are profiting from, let the audience know and don?t attempt to mislead their choices. If a customer gets the feeling that you are being dishonest describing your connection to the original retailer, they have the ability to purchase the product directly from the merchant.

Keeping track of which affiliate programs are making you the most profit is a great way to ensure you?re paid what you deserve for the time you?re spending. One thing that you will want to consider is to give your affiliates a review. By severing ties with affiliates who perform poorly, you are allowing yourself more room for high-quality partners.

TIP! These statistics are a very important tool. This is because they give you useful information, like your traffic, and the percentage of visitors who bought something.

If you are using affiliate promotion, think about making repeat customers affiliates of your product. If any of your customers buy your product or service, extend the invitation to become one of your affiliates. If your customer chooses be your affiliate, that one sale can lead to thousands of sales. This can boost revenue and improve the visibility of your product.

If the company is constantly putting out new products you should try them out! You generate more affiliate revenue by working with businesses that have a larger variety of products. Don?t waste your time or effort promoting the short-lived trendy or faddish products.

TIP! Many companies will find growth possibilities in the use of texting and texting services. This service is fairly new, but is already being employed by large numbers of affiliates.

Consider writing handwritten advertisements, then scan and put it on your site. This allows your targeted customers to see that indeed there is a very real person doing everything behind the scenes, and they will be more likely to purchase a product from you. If you do not have good handwriting, ask a friend or a family member to help you design your ad.

Remember that with online marketing lifetime commissions are very rare. Still, the rewards are very great. When a referred customer buys something at the affiliate vendor?s site, a commission goes to the person who referred them. Most affiliate companies will only pay the affiliate seller a commission if a consumer purchases within a certain amount of time. These commissions are worth hunting down if you think you can get your hands on one.

TIP! If your target audience is older this will be especially important. Sometimes something simple like making your font larger within your website can make potential customers more likely to buy your product.

Only promote products that you would personally use. Your recommendations for products reflect on you and your business. If you promote reliable products, customers will be able to trust you more. An effective way of keeping customers is by promoting other positive products.

Affiliate marketers should never be satisfied with a modicum of success but should always be hungry for more. There is never a point where you should just sit back and rest on your laurels. You can start a new blog, or a new website. Keep looking for ways to increase your earnings. As long as you keep working, you will see greater profits.

TIP! Make sure your affiliates match the type of person who visits your site. If you are a shoe retailer, you should not display ads for dish detergent.

Limit your business dealings to only fair and magnanimous companies. If they pay less than 20% commission, keep looking. High-quality affiliate companies understand that you deserve to be paid a higher commission for your efforts.

In order for your internet marketing effort to generate more revenue, punch up your review by adding media ? screenshots, videos, or anything that will show off the product. Multimedia will help more people become motivated to purchase the product you?re offering. Also, play to people?s love of technical details. Give plenty of specifics in your reviews so people can be confident about your product.

TIP! Pay for advertising and make money. Ads with targeted keywords drive business to your site more effectively.

One helpful way to generate sales is to provide user reviews and screenshots to promote your product. If you can provide potential customers with good information about your products in a variety of formats, you are much more likely to make the sale and get word-of-mouth referrals.

Only use positive language in the content you publish for the best marketing results. Even small negative phrases should be removed. g.

TIP! The first thing you must do before agreeing with an affiliate is to make sure you receive commission on all sales by the company. Make sure you get commissions for orders placed through multiple channels, including offline orders.

Offering prizes and contests on your site is a great affiliate marketing technique. This can generate a lot of extra page views and free publicity as people come to your site for the promotion.

Things that are very wanted will be a deal breaker for your success. Quality products should be your focus, but keep in mind that just because a product is popular doesn?t mean it is a quality item. Going up against giant competitors, as a small business owner, can be bad for your business. Finding a profit in a crowded marketplace may be difficult or even impossible.

TIP! California affiliate marketers who have suspended accounts as of the first part of 2011 can again place links on their websites. The legal conflicts faced by Amazon in the state have been resolved, opening up participation once again.

Listing the possible alternative uses of products you are selling as an affiliate can be great for business, whenever applicable. Your high-lipped mat can double as a tray for pet food and water, or even a dish drainer.

Georges St-Pierre snaps back at Nick Diaz calling him ?pampered? in UFC 158 call

When Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva were promoting their fight last year, there was a conference call when Silva stopped being the nice guy. After listening to Sonnen rip Silva and talk about how he was going to win for months, Silva snapped. As he had not done previously, Silva talked about the many ways he was going to beat up Sonnen.

Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has finally had his Silva Snap Moment. On the UFC 158 press call, Nick Diaz talked about how pampered GSP is.

"I work hard regardless, through this [expletive], but I don?t have people toweling me off and handing me water bottles left and right, and getting my training paid for me," Diaz said. "I?ve got to do all that [expletive] on my own, and every day I know it, and that?s why I know I have to go that much harder, and concentrate, and do that much more, because I don?t have people taking care of my money or financial tax obligations, or what have you ? I?m too busy fighting all your fights, I?m too busy entertaining all the fans.?

Like Diaz, GSP started from humble beginnings. He's been fighting since 2002, and has lost just twice. GSP is usually pretty bland in his pre-fight interviews, but balked at the idea he was handed his success.

"Let me tell you something, uneducated fool. Listen to me. I have not always been rich. I start from the bottom. I made myself, I work very hard to be where I am right now. I know you don?t believe this, because you didn?t succeed yet, and maybe you will never succeed in your life because I don?t think you?re smart enough to understand how you should do to reach that point,? St-Pierre said.

Yiiiikes. With the two fighting next weekend at UFC 158 in Montreal, there will likely be a few more unkind words said to one another. We have that to look forward to, as well as a really fun title fight on Mar. 16.
