Zimbabwe?s Kevin Curran is dead ? Cricket News Update
Former Zimbabwe batsman and national team coach Kevin Curran passed away early today, Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at the age of 53, confirmed Zimbabwe Cricket. According to a statement by Zimbabwe Cricket, Curran collapsed while jogging in Mutare on Wednesday morning, though the exact reason is yet to be determined.
The Mashonaland Eagles coach was in Mutare preparing for his side?s T20 match against Mountaineers, scheduled for today, which has now been postponed as players and the cricket fraternity in Zimbabwe copes with the sudden loss.
Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa said that they were still in a state of shock at the sudden death of Curran, whose contributions to country?s cricket are unquestionable.
"We?re still in shock, Kevin was the epitome of health and we have yet to make sense of this tragic loss," said the ZC?s managing director.
"KC's past and continued contribution to the game of cricket is unquestionable and dates as far back as his playing days up until the phenomenal work he had been doing at Mash Eagles," he added further.
The chief executive officer of Mash Eagles, Vimbai Mapukute praised Curran?s passion about the game and said that his death has left a huge void at the franchise.
"I?ve yet to meet a man more passionate about cricket in this country," said Vimbai Mapukute. "KC had put his heart and soul into developing our franchise and had great plans for our high performance gym and other facilities ... I?ve not only lost a key business ally but a friend as well," the Mash Eagles CEO added further.
Curran made his international debut for Zimbabwe in 1983, during a World Cup match against Australia, which the African side had won by 13 runs, and went on to play 11 One Day Internationals before bidding farewell to international cricket in 1987. During his four-year-long career, the all-rounder scored 287 runs and picked up nine wickets.
He then moved to England and had a long career in English county, where he played for Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire, before retiring from the game in 1999. After retirement Curran started coaching and managing cricket sides. At the time of death, he was on the board of selectors for the national team.
