The vitreous of your eye is a jelly, and is subject to both liquifying and/or detaching from the walls of your eye. This is a normal process for older people, referred to as a "Posterior Vitreous Detachment" or POV.
POVs can cause eye floater because they produce opacities within the vitreous that are now loose, and therefore visible. Floaters that are not moving, tend not to be noticed by the mind, due to neural adaption, however with a looser vitreous many floaters rarely sit still.
A common question then is why are more and more people complaining about eye floaters? Are eye floaters becoming more common?
Firstly, with computer use, we are most often staring at a bright white screen. This is the absolute perfect situation to notice floaters, because floaters are actually not the proteins or blood floaters in your vitreous, but actually they are shadows the shapes cast. So a bright light casts a dark shadow. And a dark shadow is easily seen on a bright white background!
Because of this, more people are seeing their floaters, and once you've seen them - you tend to look for more. Looking for more is like anything in life, you'll find them. That's because the more you focus the closer you're looking and the more you are likely to notice even the tiniest of imperfections within your eye.
The use of computers can also be attributed to more eye floaters because shaking the eye back and forth can cause the early breakdown of the vitreous and by result, eye floaters in the field of vision. The larger the computer monitor and the fast the action, as in video gaming, the more likely a young person will experience floaters early in their life.
"Floaters make up at least 5% of the complaints I get to my practice" says Hayward Cohen of the Eye Vision Institute, "And I give them all the advice I can. Stop abusing your eyes, firm up your vitreous with the right HA supplements, and if you can't find them use supplement made for joints."
The vitreous is made up of 99% water and 1% hyaluronic acid - that's what makes it a jelly. By exposing the vitreous to any minute traces of this substance will act against eye floaters in a positive way. How to deliver the hyaluronic acid to the eye is the key.
