Friday 8 June at the Institut fran?ais, London
7pm ? 7am
Following the huge success of the Philosophy Night in Paris, the Institut fran?ais du Royaume-Uni in collaboration with the Maison Fran?aise d?Oxford and the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure are proud to launch the first ever night of philosophy, cinema, music and arts in London: My Night with Philosophers.
With discussions, films, debates, music, lectures, arts, live readings and more, this is philosophy in a most innovate guise. No less than fifty outstanding French and British philosophers will discuss topics as wide-ranging as such as ?Love and Feminism,? ?Dreamers and Zombies? or ?Nietzche, Nihilism and the Death of God? ? not to mention the visual and musical performances, which will contribute to make this a most unusual and delightful night.
This event, which is free and open to all, aims to convey the dynamism of contemporary perceptions of philosophy by presenting the public with a number of options from a wide range of disciplines and fields. Thanks to the considerable possibilities offered by the Institute?s building, visitors will be able to choose whether to attend a lecture, a reading, a film screening, a performance or a roundtable discussion.
?
Lectures and Panels
With over fifty lectures on History, Morals & Politics, Art, Mind & Language, and the nature of philosophy, our audience be spoilt for choice throughout the night. We are also hosting panels featuring prominent authors, publishers and media: Publishing Philosophy Today, Philosophy Goes Public, and Embracing the Other? The Philosophy of Multiculturalism.
?
Philosophy Film Lab
Our selection of thought-provoking films will provide a fresh outlook on philosophy: explore moral uncertainties in My Night with Maud, enjoy blurring the boundaries between the logical and the nonsensical with Monty Python and the situationist Ren? Vi?net, and reinvent the alphabet with Gilles Deleuze.
?
Philosophy Art Lab
Going against the belief that philosophy is an isolated practice, we are delighted to welcome avant-garde artists and exclusive performances: Phillip Warnell?s short film Outlandish: Strange Foreign Bodies, Katherine Angel?s musical variations on her forthcoming book Unmastered, and the linguistically melodious collaboration between VJ Kelly Budge and DJs Frank Hutson & Louise Wallis.
?
Performances
From Yves Cusset?s philosophical stand-up comedy to Meriam Korichi?s adaptation of Billy Budd, from live interpretations of Iris Murdoch?s novels to readings of essential philosophical texts by a cast of actors including Dame Harriet Walter, our performances are ideally suited to make philosophy come alive.
?
My Night with Philosophers is curated by M?riam Korichi and organised by the Institut fran?ais du Royaume-Uni in collaboration with the Maison Fran?aise d?Oxford, and the Ecole Normale Sup?rieure.
