Not long ago I researched home heartburn remedies and then wrote an article on the subject. Quite frankly, some of the suggested household solutions seemed a bit far fetched.
A few days ago I broke my diet. The diet plan that I?m on is targeted to control acid reflux and heartburn. But, every now and then, I feel the need to indulge myself. When that happens I go overboard and try to satisfy all of my cravings in one day. Not surprisingly, my body does not react well to a sudden change in diet. My greatest fear was realized as severe heartburn and acid reflux furiously attacked my esophagus and throat.
Since heartburn is seldom a problem I don?t keep antacids on hand. So?I was desperately in need of relief from the severe burning pain of a late night acid reflux attack. Then I recalled the article that I had written on home remedies and I searched my memory for something that was available in my pantry or refrigerator that might help.
Then I thought about?pickle juice. I learned, in my research, that many folks believe in it. In fact, they suggest using it in different forms. Some people maintain that the best heartburn remedy is sweet pickle juice. Others claim that dill pickle juice is best. And there are yet other people who are full persuaded that fermented pickle juice is the only way to go. At that point of advanced discomfort I was willing to try any kind of juice. I was willing to try anything.
Fortunately, sitting all alone on a middle shelf was an unopened jar of chow-chow pickles. Hastily, I took hold of the pickle jar and poured out a half glass of juice, held my nose, and drank it down. Initially, the sour taste was overpowering. But, happily, the acid reflux and severe heartburn gradually disappeared. Surprisingly, the pickle juice remedy came through as advertised and really worked.
Do you recall that old advertising slogan? ?How do you spell relief? Well, at least on this one occasion I spelled relief, ?p-i-c-k-l-e- j-u-i-c-e!? My apologies to those of you whose wisdom I doubted. Your home remedy for heartburn really does work.
So, now I am back to the home remedy that consistently keeps heartburn and reflux under control. Back to a diet that avoids heartburn triggers like spicy and greasy foods, caffeine, carbonated beverages, alcohol, and chocolate.
I have great admiration for folks who are unwaveringly disciplined. However, even though I am reasonably disciplined, there are occasional breakdowns. And when I foolishly elect to go off my diet I reap the unpleasant aftermath.
The truth is, you can control heartburn and acid reflux with a sensible diet. But there will be times, for most of us, where we just have a craving that must be satisfied. In fact, we even know what breaking the diet leads to but we go ahead and do it anyway. And then?we pay the painful price. The good news is that there are home heartburn remedies that really work. When you are in that moment of heartburn desperation reach for a jar of pickles and have a small glass of?pickle juice.
