Every day there is an estimated one hundred thousand rejection letters sent out by schools, colleges and universities to hopeful student applicants. When one receives such a letter, not all hope is lost as there is always the option to lodge a school admission appeal, something about twenty percent of rejected applicants resort to. Given this twenty percent, only less than half is actually accepted. Whether you are a college or university student or a parent writing a petition for your child, in order for it to be effective, one must make sure to have a good case.
Before even beginning to write an appeal, one must make sure that all application requirements were complied with in detail. For some, this is a mistake that is very easily avoided though often overlooked. Though some institutions might reconsider despite this error, for others, this will cost the acceptance of the student into the school.
The next step is writing the letter of appeal. The letter is important because this will determine whether you get to move on to the second step of getting an appeal hearing. Some are not even scheduled for a hearing due to a weak letter.
You will have to think of the reasons why you want, or why you want your child to go to a certain school. Such reasons will have to be substantial, with hard evidence to support them as much as possible. The more significant and positive your reasons are, the better your chances of getting a hearing schedule.
When writing the letter, try your best not to sound and use words that convey too much emotion. The case will come off stronger when it is written with supporting facts as opposed to emotion. It is also best to always be realistic about one's reasons and expectations.
Usually, the rejection letter will state the reason for rejection. In making a decision, the appeals panel will weigh out the school's side and the applicant's side. The panel will study the side of the institution as well as the side of the applicant and see which side has a stronger case. If the panel decides that the school has a stronger case then the applicant will be rejected. If the panel decides that the applicant has a stronger case then the applicant will be accepted.
Another important thing to take note of is the deadline for the submission of the letter of appeal. It is best to send in the letter before the date of the deadline. It does not mean that one is no longer able to petition once the date of the deadline has passed but it might mean lesser chances of being successful.
Writing a school admission appeal letter is a daunting task. Some people hire experts in writing such, but this is not an option for all due to its expensive price. The best way to write such an effective letter is to arm yourself with facts, not only about yourself or your child but the institution that you are appealing to as well.
